I appear to have solved similar problem with my drive by downloading a FIRMWARE UPDATE off the following link:
https://www-304.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-45893&brandind=5000004
(Read the text file & follow installation instructions). I dont have an IBM machine so was a bit worried, but definitely same drive so gave it a shot
(I saved file to my system & virus scanned 1st - advise same, but checked out ok)
didn't check but mebbe applies to 8481B

I don't know if this will work, but I am going to give it a shot.
First I will install windows XP service pack 3.
If that deosn't work
I will uninstall SP3 and SP2.
Hopefully this will alow me to burn discs without that stupid error.
