Hey, sorry, but I already destroyed the casing to the cd drive.
probably the chips too. But thanks. A little too late though.

I see in your post the following resolution:
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
the upperfilter value appears to be identical to the lowerfilter value....
I only have {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Is it the upper or lower and where is the other?
Thanks,
Malcolm

| RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5
i've run across a lot of cd-roms that have this problem (me being a computer repair tech and all), and the problem is actually very simple to fix - all you need is a philips screw driver. the problem isn't with the drivers - as you said, device manager shows it working properly, the drive opens and closes, it just doesn't read. This is why - the laser that scans the disk is stuck. cd drives generally blow around quite a bit of dust, and over time, the rails that the laser slides on gets dirty, and the laser isn't able to hit it's "starting position" so to speak. To fix this, you need to take the cd-rom drive out of your computer, disconnect any cables going to it, and with a phillips screw driver, remove the outer casing on the cd-rom. you will see the laser right away - what ever you do, DO NOT TOUCH THE LASER!! the laser will be setting on a circuit board, which sits on 2 metal rails (with this type of drive anyways). all you have to do, is push the laser back to its starting position. the lasers starting position is going to be closest to the center of the disk - cd's are read going from the inside to the outside. i ussually like to clean the rails it slides on as well, while i'm in the drive. this can be done by lightly brushing the rails with a paper towl, or something of the sort. after you push the laser into it's starting position again and clean the rails, simply put the drive back together, plug it back into your computer, and boot up. the drive should work fine now!

I see I'm not alone...Tried the changes to the registry (removing 2 files) and no fix. Tried uninstall/install hardware and no fix. Tried downloading latest driver from GEAR (since the problem occurred when copying CD into iTunes, which used GEAR software) and no fix. I'll try to clean it, but any other suggestions I'll take.
Thanks.

| RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5
I have recently installed Vista Home Premium. For some reason it does not recognize the Sony CRE215E5, In device manager it shows up with the yellow alert mark on it. When I hook up an older harddrive with XP OS on it, it will recognise the Sony and it works the way it should. Why does Vista not recognize the Sony drive >>> Any ideas as to how to correct this??

This is my experience...
Start up Nero
Select file or disk to copy
Click Burn...
Now I wait... still waiting... something's not right there's no progress... OK, click cancel after waiting for over two minutes... Nero freezes, open up task manager and try to end Nero not responding... try to eject disk... still frozen, try to logoff... what this, can't logoff... computer freezes, now I'm pissed... push and hold power button until the damn thing turns off.
Now here's the weird part, when starting the PC sony-crx blinks away and won't eject... if I were to leave the pc all day and night the stupid drive will continue to blink and hold disk hostage. I found out that unplugging the machine resets the drive which I can't really trust any more. Plan on replacing it soon with an ASUS DVD-RW.
What's up with these companies making junk products, build some that would last until I get tired or decide to upgrade not break on me. My buddy eBay was expecting me to hook him up but now the trash can is all it'll see.

My sony cd-rw crx215e5 was working fine in windows xp. I upgraded to vista basic and now it won't work. It says all the proper drivers are installed when I try to install new drivers.When I open the device manager it says this device can not start and says code 10. The upgrade advisor thing said I should buy a new dvd rw drive, internal or external. I'm going to buy an external one. Does anyone know what causes this?

Ran cleaning disc. Seemed to work fine. Locks up computer when trying to read saved data from another disc. Have to manually restart computer to recover. |
