Hello,
I'm a unlucky owner of one of those GCA-4164B I found inside my expensive HP Pavillion desktop.
This writable drive is so slow it slows down the entire machine. It seems to me that the drive has no memory buffer at all.
Moreover I'm unable to find any technical specification of this unit in the internet neither a possibly better working driver. Can you help me please?

Had the same problem - 100% cpu usage and stutter playback with CDs and DVDs. The problem seemed to be the secondary drive reverting to PIO mode, even when DMA was selected. Using this: http://winhlp.com/WxDMA.htm sorted things out for me. Hope it works for you.

RE: hl-dt-st gca-4164b driver required

I've got one of these drives in my HP Pavilion Media Center PC also. Bought the box last Christmas and soon discovered that when I burn a DVD it will very rarely play right through without the picture freezing at some point (varies but usually about 30 - 40 mins in). I use the included Sonic software to burn and play back on a domestic DVD player connected to the TV.

Reported the problem to HP when I noticed they do a fix for a similar problem on the HL-DT-ST GWA 4164B drive. Help desk were useless BTW - suggested I restore all my applications (duh!) and then when I tried again they suggested using the above fix (didn't work as it needs to be same drive ID). Gave up when they suggested I call them etc.

Again, if anyone has the fixed driver please it would be good.

Incidently, I haven't noticed the performance hit the others have reported but it does take a while to burn a DVD - perhaps I'll check next time.

I used that link, wasted 3 cd's and no joy. Each time it asked for a blank one, popped it in, said it was burning bootable disc, spitted it out, auto popped back in then after a bit message came up bootable cd failed to burn. 2 bin files on disc that can't beopened?

I'm having problems with this drive in my compaq presario. Used to work well, recently I can only get Tuffdiscs to work with it. Anything else it doesn't even acknowledge. Serves me right for buying a computer from PC World I suppose. I think the only fix would be to buy a new DVD Writer.

My GCA-4164B recently stopped recognizing and buring CDs only. It still reads and burns DVDs. HP/Compaq had been of no help to me. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I even purchased a new DVD/CD Burner and the problem was not fixed.

I've already had to replace one GCA-4164B dvd drive which failed under guarantee. The replacement is now not reading dvd's or dvd+r -r it just doesn't recognise format I'm looking at drivers and dvd decoders etc but think I'll cut my losses and install a more reliable drive.

RE: hl-dt-st gca-4164b driver required

Let's face it folks, the GWA4164 drive is just a lousy POS. Go to every forum, and everyone is having problems with that drive. Whether it reads one type or brand of disk and not another, or reads but won't write, or won't do ANYTHING (like my drive). You can update drivers and firmware until you're blue in the face. I've done all the updates to no avail.

Just go out and buy a new drive, and be done with it once and for all. I'm gonna upgrade to a Sony drive. I've used them in a whole assortment of different computers, and every one of 'em has been just great.
