increase maximum ALLOWED memory

Hello, i have an HP Pavilion a6010n Desktop PC.
According to the system specs,

I'm only allowed the maximum of 4GB of installed memory

Memory Installed 1 GB
Maximum allowed 4 GB* (4 x 1 GB)
*Actual available memory may be less
Speed supported PC2-4200 MB/sec
Type 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM

Can I install 6 GB or 8 GB of memory?
Why is there this pre-defined limit?

Thanks
Michael
