DVD/CD ROM drive stops after XP SP3 update - Easy fix resolved it

held off on updating Windows XP to SP3 on my HP Pavilion ze4600 until a few months ago. True to my fears, installing it caused a problem for my computer - my Samsung SN-324F DVD/CD ROM drive stopped working (I think it was code 39 - "cannot locate drivers or they are missing" or some such thing). Of course I started looking for a driver update only to learn that this drive uses firmware. And of course Samsung and HP offer no support for this drive anymore (I will not be buying any more computers from HP due to this and many other issues). For the last 3 months I've been without a CD-ROM drive and for the last two months I've been researching on-line in my spare time (which I have very little of) and had already started despairing. Today was the last day I gave myself to find something before I took drastic measures. And then I stumbled on the Silcon Guide website where there was discussion about the same problem I was having and a number of commenters were saying their problem was resolved! After 3 months of fooling around with this, it seemed way too good (and too easy) to be true. After reading about all the nightmares of other people on-line who had tried to flash the drive and failed, I thought this was a relatively harmless fix that could be fixed back if it didn't work, unlike the poor souls who tried to install the incorrect firmware. The only change I made to the fix which involves a registry edit, is that instead of deleting the files I chose to rename them (I didn't have the courage to delete anything from the registry as I'm inexperienced with it). After the changes, I held my breath, rebooted, and to my amazement my combo drive came back to life and worked like a charm! I must tell you I was very skeptical that it would work. So here is the fix: (provided by the commenter Charles; they don't allow posting links on this website anymore)

1. Click on START button, the click on RUN
2. Enter REGEDIT and press enter
3. When REGEDIT starts, open up the following folders
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
"Upperfilters"
"Lowerfilters"
Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.

Then close REGEDIT, shutdown & restart your PC

Now I'm creating a new thread for posting this comment so any other people like me (who still have these old machines and are late to come across this problem) may have an easier time of locating this information to resolve their DVD/CD ROM disappearing problem too. I saw a lot of recent postings elsewhere of people with this problem. Note that not everyone who tried this fix had a successful outcome. I'm putting more key words in this so hopefully it will show up in the search engines more readily. I had a hell of a time finding this information - hopefully you didn't. A big Thank-You goes to out to "Chalky" who originally posted the fix on Silicon Guide back in 2002(!). We appreciate it very much! Good deeds apparently have a long life.

Upper and Lower filters were not there to be removed. I am however having the same issue.

I have a similar issue: XP SP3 Pioneer DVD DBC-202

1. The internal DVD/CD drive is detected in BIOS and shows up in XP explorer but as a DVD-RAM. It will not recognize and disks unless they are in when the PC boots. It just shows an empty folder and the system hangs while it is trying to read the disk if a disk is loaded after the boot.

2. ALSO, when I plug in a USB DVD drive, the exact same thing happens - so I know it must be a settings issue and not a problem with the physical drives(s).

3. I have tried removing the upper/lower filters; uninstalling in Device Manager; & rebooting and it makes no difference.

4. There was an old thread somewhere about ustorage driver from a USB drive partitioning application - but I don't have that on my system.

5. I have removed and re-installed the Cyberlink software that came with the drive and that made no difference - except when installed it would throw up a "please insert a disk in drive E:" message instead of hanging the machine.

I am completely stumped.

- Does anybody know any other registry entry or DLL file that might be involved / corrupted that might be casuing this problem ?

RE: DVD/CD ROM drive stops after XP SP3 update - Easy fix resolved it

THANK YOU! After my system crashed and I had to do a complete recovery, I wanted NOT to reload SP3. But of course Microsoft Office 2010 said it wouldn't load without it and we need Office. So I had to give in and load SP3 and zap...there went my DVD/CD drives (HP DVD Writer 640b and SAMSUNG CD-ROM SC-148A)...again...(happened before when I loaded SP3 and brought it to my local pc fixer to fix to the tune of $100, thank you very much!). I used your little trick and voila! They're baaaack! Can't thank you enough for making sure this layman's fix got out there.

I located the folder you indicated, but I have several files listed in that folder and one of them is called "upperfilters" but there isn't a "lowerfilters". Has anyone had this problem??
