Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

It used to work just fine, but suddenly it neither reads nor writes CDs. I read something somewhere else about taking it out and messing with the heads or something... but I'm not sure, and I'd rather get some confirmation before I start messing with things I don't understand.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

when you look in the device manager does it have a red exclamation mark or a yellow question mark. Also, when you right click on it in the device manager list and choose properties does report an error or say that the device is working properly?
Tania Chase on June 9, 2004
RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

My Sony CD-RW CRX215E5 also just quit on me a few days ago. I suspect the problem with mine is mechanical, as the drive always had a bit of "play" in the drive bay.

When it quit, I could jiggle the drive and sometimes the system would recognize the drive (E: on my computer), and sometimes not. Sometimes the eject button would work, and sometimes not.

I insert a disk when the computer recognizes the drive, and an electrical connect is made (I know this because the eject button and the drive light works again), and the light on the drive blinks about six times (about once per sec.), and then blinks very rapidly until I take the disk out.

There is no indication of there being a problem in the device manager. In fact, in "Properties" it states the device is working properly, when it is recognized, of course. I also attempted to update the driver, but it states that there is none better that what is already installed.

I also checked connections, and reseated the cables to the drive.

Being more digitally inclined, than mechanically or electrically, I hope someone can tell me if it looks like my CD-RW drive has bitten the dust, or if there might be another problem.

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

I have the exact same issue as being described above...was working fine then all of a sudden...only two blinks, no indication in the device manager section but no recognition from the menu that a cd is in the tray. Has anyone found the solution yet?

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

I may be the bearer of bad news, Hetz... I am one to check all avenues before I give up on something, and I did have to assume that my Sony CD-RW CRX215E5 gave up the ghost. I bought an I/O Magic internal CD-RW, and it installed and runs beautifully on my XP system. It is rather inexpensive, and I had my doubts because of that when I hurriedly bought it.

Email me at yellorowz@gwi.net if you want to know where to get it.

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

In response to: "can anyone tell me the speeds this CRX215E5 reads, writes, etc...........thx BB"

From: http://www.ahead.de/en/632012038142166.php?manu=SONY&lang=en

The read/write speed of the Sony CRX215E5 is listed as 52x24x52. For those who may not know, generally the three numbers in the speed rating for a CD writer correspond to the speed of writing CD-R discs, writing CD-RW discs, and reading CDs respectively.

(CD-R write speed) x (CD-RW write speed) x (CD reading speed)

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

hi, i was having a problem with the Sony CRX215E5 CD-RW. When i first got it, it worked beautifully. But now it will take a good 20 min to burn a cd, and it is farelly new. i also figured out that i can only burn on CD-RW discs and when i try to use a regular CD-R discs, it doesnt work. it just keeps tryig to read it over and over, and won't even let me take the disc out. I have to shut down my comp and restart evrytime to take it out. it'll just freeze up. This never used to be the case. If someone can help or has any ideas as to what i should do, please leave a message or email me at kurt_cobain304@hotmail.com. I am in dire need. thanks.

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

Exact same thing here. Same driver, same problem. Was working find yesterday, now won't do a damn thing. I've run a virus scan, a spyware scan, gone all the way through troubleshooting....nothing. Even tried running my Compaq PC Doctor, but I can't even run the TEST because it's not even acknowledging I've inserted a disc to test with.

When I pull up 'My Computer' and open the E drive (CD-ROM), it's just blank...like there's nothing there.

Only had this computer just a little over a yr. What a RIP-OFF!

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

Same problem here to. I've had the computer like 13 months and it was working fine and just stopped one day. The lights flash rapidly w/a cd in but it isn' reading. I, like Laura, can't even rund the PC Doctor... I have to cancel the test because it keeps saying "please insert disk w/media files, music files...blah blah. Apparently these cd burners were made not made to last. I won't be buying another one from Sony. I even tried doing the download that you guys have mentioned.. I guess just for laughs cause it keeps kicking my disk out... This is a joke.

I don't remember uninstalling/reinstalling a drive. Honestly, I don't know how to do that but I did try some of the things above. Like downloading the suggested stuff. I followed all the directions and it still doesn't work.
Shawn on October 8, 2004
RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

Well if you want to just try and unistall the whole CD drive from the computer it is real easy in XP. All you have to do is go to system properties and click on the hardware tab. Then open the Divice manager and look under the DVD/CD ROM folder and right click on the CD ROM drive installed and click unistall. This will remove the Drive from your computer. In order to reinstall the drive just open up the add new hardware wizzard and let it search, it will find it again and reistall it for you.

For "Die-Hard" Sony CRX215E5 Drive Owners

If you do have to resign yourself to the fact the your Sony drive has died, go to: http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/I_O_Magic_I522452_internal_52X_CD_RW/4014-3207_16-20827169.html?tag=bc for a listing of stores where you can buy the I/O magic internal drive I mentioned above. I got mine at Staples; it is also listed there, and has the lowest price. You can also enter your zip code there to calculate shipping, taxes, etc. to give you your total cost.

I don't know if "do eBay", but I just did a quick search there for that I/O Magic Internal Drive, and there is one there with a starting bid of $1.00, with shipping of only $7.00!! There are no bids yet, and it ends in about 3 1/2 days. It is here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=51053&item=5128478098&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW. I wish I'd seen one on eBay when I bought mine!

A note on the I/O Magic: Mine is still working great. But, the Nero burning software that came packaged with my cd-rw did not work well. In fact, at one point, I was unable to burn anything, and I thought another burner drive had 'bitten the dust'. As a last ditch effort, I totally uninstalled Nero, and searched for a free CD burner program on the Net, and found the "CDBurnerXP Pro" CD/DVD burning software here: http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/3/1/3-1-14.shtml . It works, and my I/O Magic is burning great! So, maybe you could try uninstalling whatever burning software you are using, and downloading this free one and giving it a try before giving up on your Sony drive.

Hope this helps, and have a great day!

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

Hey, i have decided to give up, i just threw my Sony CD-RW to the garbage, nothing worked. I tried everything (including unistalling the driver and physically unplugging the drive) and nothing worked. Sorry guys, the best solution is to get a new one. I also worte to the Sony guys, and you know what they told me? they told me that they couldn't help me, because the drive i needed help with (CRX215E5) is an OEM item and they cant help with those kinda drives and i was to contact the manufacturer (HP) and the manufacturer sent me the original drivers, and didnt work either. So, im sorry but this is it.
I'd like a make a public appreciation to Tania, since she helped me out and gave time of her for me. Thanks Tania.

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

Obviously everyone here has problems with the cd drive. I wrote
in this forum on 6/21/2006 and didn't get an answer. Now, I
have one solution for everyone here; DON'T USE COMPUTERS
THAT HAVE WINDOWS ON THEM. I've noticed that all hp
divisions have the Sony CRAPX215E5 on them if it was made in
the past year and back since 2000. I use Mac OS X 10.4.7 Tiger.
Mac makes their own cd drives, computers, harddrives, ect.
Microsoft is just an operating system. Operating system as in
you have to operate on it every three days. Mac is everything.
They make their own computers with every component by apple.
There for Apple is better then Windows and microsoft plain and
simple. Just buy a brand new Hitachi Dvd-rw drive for 50$.
That's what I did.

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

Methinks Mac computers stutter....

you gotta get a PC. they only send messages once

My tale of woe is that my Sony crx215e5 will burn and play cds with WMP (windows media player) and Real Audio's player but Music match Jukebox ver 10 (which I prefer 'cause I like to rip to MP3 320) will not see anything in the drive no matter what I do.

So we may have a XP visibility problem instead of a pure Sony crapout problem.

What are you guys using to play (that doesn't)
WMP? Real audio? other?

PS my problems started after recovering a xp home sys that crashed and burned - I installed xp pro and things just aren't quite the same...

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

OK, here's whatcha do. Since finding this solution from Micro$oft I have performed the "operation" numerous times, and the CD access magically comes back. (I don't know what program is screwing up the registry but I think it's the HP scanner.) Well, anyway, you "simply" have to edit the registry and after that it works fine. If you've never done that before, print out these instructions and follow them EXACTLY.

Skip the blah-blah and start at RESOLUTION. Go to the Start button, go to "Run" (you've probably never done that before, right??) and type "regedit". The Registry Editor program will start, and you can continue with the instructions. FIRST, export a backup copy of the registry files (it's big). Then you search for the 2 "keys" that are messing you up, and delete those 2 lines. Close, and your CD is back!!! But...don't fool with ANYthing else in your registry!!!!

SYMPTOMS
After you remove either compact disc (CD) recording software or other software from your computer, your computer may exhibit the following behavior:
• In My Computer, there is no access to your CD-ROMs.
• In Device Manager, the following error message appears in connection with any CD-ROM device that is part of your computer system:
The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31).

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.
STATUS
This is a known issue that can occur when you remove Easy CD Creator version 5.01 or earlier or DirectCD version 3.01c or earlier. This issue may also occur with Easy CD Creator version 5.01 and with DirectCD 3.01d or later.
MORE INFORMATION
There may be other third-party CD-writing software products that exhibit similar behavior. Some or all of the troubleshooting steps in this article might apply if such a product also adds entries under the UpperFilters or LowerFilters value in the registry, either by adding its own filter drivers or by removing the registry keys and values outlined in this article that begin with:

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

I see in your post the following resolution:

2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

the upperfilter value appears to be identical to the lowerfilter value....

I only have {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Is it the upper or lower and where is the other?

Thanks,

RE: Problems with Sony CD-RW CRX215E5

i've run across a lot of cd-roms that have this problem (me being a computer repair tech and all), and the problem is actually very simple to fix - all you need is a philips screw driver. the problem isn't with the drivers - as you said, device manager shows it working properly, the drive opens and closes, it just doesn't read. This is why - the laser that scans the disk is stuck. cd drives generally blow around quite a bit of dust, and over time, the rails that the laser slides on gets dirty, and the laser isn't able to hit it's "starting position" so to speak. To fix this, you need to take the cd-rom drive out of your computer, disconnect any cables going to it, and with a phillips screw driver, remove the outer casing on the cd-rom. you will see the laser right away - what ever you do, DO NOT TOUCH THE LASER!! the laser will be setting on a circuit board, which sits on 2 metal rails (with this type of drive anyways). all you have to do, is push the laser back to its starting position. the lasers starting position is going to be closest to the center of the disk - cd's are read going from the inside to the outside. i ussually like to clean the rails it slides on as well, while i'm in the drive. this can be done by lightly brushing the rails with a paper towl, or something of the sort. after you push the laser into it's starting position again and clean the rails, simply put the drive back together, plug it back into your computer, and boot up. the drive should work fine now!
