It all started with a horrible mistake: I installed Sony SonicStage ATRAC3 software. Running WIN 2000. I uninstalled it after experiencing problems w/ OS loading, error msgs, etc etc etc.
After the reboot, OS took a long time to load. I reverted to Last Known Good Config but that didn't solve the problem.
Win 2000 took long time to load. Office would freeze. Windows Explorer would freeze. Everything froze! Rebooted many times coz I would freeze in middle of surfing.
Kept getting msgboxes: Found New Hardware, Eject/unplug Hardware popping up frequently.
Tried going through those wizards to resolve problem (used my driver software that came w/ computer). But still get these msgs.
When I go to Explorer, the CDRW does not show up as one of the drives. When I go to Device Manager, the device has a question mark attached to the device.
What am I doing wrong? What should I be doing? BTW, I have Nero installed too. But have not tried burning since the fiasco earlier this month. Computer is a P4 1.5 ghz if that helps. |

Thats what happened to me about Windows 2000, I think it is a very unstable operating system becuase it has 5 area points that if you do something wrong it will screw you up. BTW If it has a yellow question mark next to it it means the driver is not good or there is a better version of the driver! |

This is very strange as I have a similar problem with my Acer CD-RW 24x10x40. I'm running Windows XP an from time to time just like that the cd drive seems to disappear even from the device manager and then suddenly it there again. When the computer is on sleep I can experience that the CD in question seems to boot and boot for a while and after a while with no reaction it stars booting again.
The problem started after I had to reinstall win Xp.
Can any one help to solve the problem – Is it a matter of getting another driver ?? |

UPDATE TO ORIG. POSTING...
It turns out the Acer CD-RW 24x10x40 has bitten the dust. Here is how I determined that it has in fact died:
(1) Checked CMOS settings, set to automatically determine CD hardware. Computer determined only DVD-R available but not the Acer CDRW.
(2) Removed the ACER CDRW and tested on another computer to determine if the problem is the CDRW or my computer.
(3) Result: other computer could not detect hardware... there is something wrong mecanically, physically or electrically or a combination of those elements.
(4) Computer still boots up slowly, cleaned registry. Ran Spybot, and antivirus - everything is ok. |

Same OS same drive, Windows 2000 and the acer 24x10x40, thought I had a PSU issue so I ran a barebones config with the drive be the only optical. Ended up freezing my comp. There doesnt seem to be a firmware upgrade or a fix from acer, guess it's time for a new burner.
Gotta admit that it's weird that the drive chooses nearly 3 years later to choke out. 3 years all on Windows 2K BTW.
Personally I think a service pack for Win2k might have done in the drive. |

Ironically, I have had my computer for the same length of time (give or take 6 mths). And it is rather odd other Acer users have similar issues too.
You are right about the Win Updates. I recently did a few patches. Could be a number of things. Chalk it up to experience. |

I don´t think is a problem of drivers or win updates, probably is your nero.
1-delete all the burning programs from the pc and restart it.
2-check if the cd-rw appears in the explorer, if doesn´t just wait it will come back.
3-install Nero when the the cd-rw appears in the explorer(if you are using a trial version of nero you will have this problem again and again, so try to install a registerd old version like 5.5.5.3 and update it, but restart your computer every time you install a new version). |

I have build a new computer and installed a dvdrw and an Acer CDRW 20x10x40. After installing Win XP Pro Windows, while booting I would get an error that the Acer CDRW was incompatible. I would press F1 to continue and everything worked great. Until a few days later Windows XP would not boot at all. After reformating my hard drive and the problem continuing, I unplugged the Acer drive and the computer booted up fine. Now 2 weeks later my computer is working great. I don't think it is a driver issue, I believe it to be something with the Acer drive itself. Good Luck! |

I have:
Same Acer CDRW Drive
Windows ME
It shows up normally under my computer. So no problem there.
This is my problem.
My drive for some reason won't load up cds, blanks, cdrws cdrs, data, and basic audio cds.
I tried everything I could think of. I put the drive in another computer, still wouldn't load anything up. Nero sees it, but when I go to say erase a CDRW disc, it keeps telling me there isn't a disc in the drive.
Could the drive be faulty? Or is it dirty? |

My unit is continuously in the record mode (red light on)from the time I turn my computer on, until I turn the computer off. I get no response from switch to open CD tray. There is no CD in the unit. Unit was not installed by Dell. It has been in use for over a year without problems, until now. Any suggestions? |

Stopped working and not able to use CD's,data at all. You can hear the system trying to load but it does nothing. All my "geeks" have told me to get a external drive. Can't reload Windows Office on this after it disappeared.
Acer needs to replace my drive for free!!! |
