Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

Mm.. Alright.. I've never reformatted a computer before, and have tried getting help from friends who've done it before, but when describing to them what I have showing on my screen, they get lost.. Would any of you out there be able to tell us exactly what to do to reformat an EMachine? So many viruses have ravaged this poor thing, and it needs reformatting badly.

RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

hi Nara...

I want to tell u that i have an E-Machine too... and that it can be formated normally and easyly if u know the propper way of formating a computer... if it's a windows XP all u need is put the cd in and restart ur computer , u'll boot from the cd, and follow the procidures...
after it is installed u'll need to install the drivers...
note: U'll have to backup ur data on cd's or floppy's b4 doing this thing, or u'll loose all ur work...

Good Luck

RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

Went and took a look at this emachine...It was full of dirt and dust. I cleaned it out and it began to work again... I believe by the amount of dust it was overheating..... It ran fine for 24 hours then today my friend went and tried to turn the machine on and it lights up all keyboard lights and flashes them constantly...the pc also beeps short constant beeps.... her mouse wont work either... is this maybe the card, ram, or just the keyboard bad??? anyone know......?????

Call microsoft techsupport. Tell them you lost your cd. They will ask you for the Product Key on the side of the case to make sure you really own windows. They will send you a new one. Not sure if they will charge you though.

Our computer was working fine until one day it just shut
down. It says that win is either lost and corrupted?
Does anyone know what that means? I've asked
around and they think that it either got deleted or has a
virus. I would really appreciate the input.

Windows stores your product key and you can get it out with software.

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

This program will tell you the product key that was entered in during installation. Run it, write it down, and DONT lose it.

Next call microsoft techsupport and tell them you lost your cd and you need a new one, they will ask for your product key, give them the one you found with the program. It will cost about $10 but they'll send you a new one.

Another alternative is that if you know a friend with XP Home you can use their CD ONLY IF you use your product key that you found. You can even make a copy of the CD for yourself, because is not the cd that liscenced it is the product key.

i have a relevent question. how do i know if the disk i have is the reformatting disk? im a teenager so i dont realy know what to look for to tell me if i have the correct disk.
Ben on November 26, 2005
RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

If is says Windows Installation, or if it says Operating System, or System Resore, then it is a copy of windows installation. ALL windows installation disks have an option to reformat the drive during the install process.

RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

I'm trying to restore my other computer using the Restore CDs that came with it. Win XP Home. The computer will not boot from either of the 2 Restore CDs, even though CD-ROM Drive is first in the Boot Device Priority list in BIOS.
The CD-Rom is working, and there is no floppy disk in the floppy drive.
Corbo on December 4, 2005
RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

If anybody's interested, after trying many methods during many frustrating hours, I finally decided to think outside the box. I took the hard drive out of the computer and installed it as the master hd of another computer, one which actually booted from the CDROM using the boot CD, and ran Windows Setup that way. Afterwards I switched it back and Windows detected a ton of new hardware, but it's all peachy now. Drivers can be installed with XP or downloaded, but getting the OS on the hd first is the important thing.
Ben on December 4, 2005
RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

Gorbo;
This method "CAN" work sometimes. However microsoft saw this as a piracy risk and made it so that if to much hardware changes from one boot to the next it will become unactivated (for full copies, not dell or gateway setups), or will cease to boot entirely even in safe mode. The method you chose will ONLY work if it is a oem install (Ex. Dell Or Gateway restore disks), and the two computers are similar. Windows cares the most about processor and motherboard change and if they are two far apart windows will not boot. You got lucky, but for anyone else wanting to try this be sure you're willing to spend the time to do it twice as it might not work.
Corbo on December 4, 2005
RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

Oh wow I was unaware of that. For the record I installed -using a full copy of XP home- on a computer with an AMD Athlon, and very different specs than the computer the hd came from, one with a Celeron. I did use the serial key from the Celeron machine though.
The only problem I ran into was the SM Bus Contoller couldn't find drivers to install, but after SP2 and all the updates it resolved itself.

RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

"Maninder malhi":
You will most likely need to reformat your drive and reinstall windows. If there is any way to back your files now do so because a reformat will completely destroy your files.

Here is link about windows installation that is pretty good.
http://pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1435
It does not cover reformating though. To do that: during the windows setup, where it shows you your harddrives and their partitions, chose to remove the partition with your corrupted windows. Then create a new partition in its place and continue with the guide from there.
Ben on December 14, 2005
RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

"sohail khan"

Did you reformat or repartition the drive? If not you might be able to grab the code out of the old windows with this:
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

If you did erase your harddrive you may have completely lost your code. One last option is to call techsupport for your computer, ex: Call Dell if its a dell or gateway of its a gateway. They "MIGHT" be able to give you a new one.
And as a "LAST" resort, buy a new copy of XP and use the code from it.

RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

Hello everyone,
Ive been reading over all the questions listed and i notice a lot of questions about finding the windows serial key and a lot of people seemed to have suggested that magicaljellybean key finder thing. Well i thought i would test it out on my friends computer.
I downloaded the program and ran the key finder and the serial # the program gave me is not the same # as on the windows serial key sticker thats on the case. Did anyone else seem to come to the same conclusion? Or did i do something wrong? Please help me, thank you.

RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

It gave me my serial code and all codes on all the computers i've ever used it on. I'm not sure why it would give you any other code, unless the code on the side of your case is NOT the code that was used during windows installation.

RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

um i have the windows xp home edition boot disk but its not working and it stops at different times and doesnt get me to the part where it says press enter to reformat and things like that. My friend says that there is a floppy disk i can use instead of my boot disk but um does anyone have any ideas?
Ben on July 27, 2006
RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

Try using a friend's disk. You can use ANY windows xp home disk as long as you use YOUR product key. (please ignore if it is Dell or HP specific, they do that sometimes) Your problem "might" be the disk itself. However, if it still does not work with another disk you may be having bigger problems than just installing windows; anything from overheating to bad ram to a bad motherboard, to.. the list goes on. If you cant make it work with a friends disk and you are not comfortable with diagnosing hardware failures I would recomend having it looked at. I am telling you this because windows installation will only fail if its a bad disk or major system issues are occuring, I've dealt with both. As far as the floppy thing; yes they do exist. however they are designed to allow installation on a computer that does not support booting from CD-ROM. The installation still occures from the CD and if you have a bad cd, that didn't get you anywhere. I hope this helps, I can't give you a more clear answer without getting more info on exactly what is happening during the install process.

Hello ,

i used my CD that came with it and all after i did there was something wrong i didn't have sound or anything i was able to get my sound by downloading a program but i have errors and other stuff on my computer that i dont know how to fix i have feeling its cuz of my hard drive my hard drive failed about a year ago and i had to get it replaced i have tryed putting the CD in and repaired the stuff thats not working and everything but i dont know what to do
my friend told me to download " driver detective " and it will help on whats not working this is what i says

the following are " out of date " and they will not update
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
-Standard dual channel PCI IDE controller
-VIA bus Master IDE controller
Network adapters
-Realtek RTL8139 family PCI fast Ethernet NIC
System devices
-(8) PCI standard ISA bridge
-Universal serial bus controllers

i have errors in the following
Other devices
-CIF single chips
-PCI simple communications controller
-Video controllers(VGA compatible)
-(2) VIA Rev 5 or later USB universal host controller

it has update options but it cost $30 for this program so i rather not do that cuz i dont have $30

Thank you for your help
Eric on June 19, 2008
RE: Reformating Windows XP Home Edition

Hi Paul,

I don't think you need to update any of those drivers that are marked as being "out of date". I would suggest installing the driver for your video card (the Video controller (VGA compatible). Just go to the website of the manufacturer of your video card and look for a driver that you can download for your particular model of video card.

Eric.
