Hi I have a problem with Nero, I've got 2 cd rom drives on my pc one's a DVD Writer the other is just a DVD player, when every I try to do a cd copy with Nero it thinks 1 of them is an image recorder so I have to put the orignal disk in first and it burns it as an image to the hardrive then it ask's me to put a blank in and burns it off the hardrive where as before I could just stick both cd's in at the same time and it would copy off the cd not burn it as an image first I think the problem started since I installed service pack 2, the only other cd burning software I have on my pc is Sonic Record now, that has stopped working completly when I open it and click CD copy it says no compatible CD-RW hardware found, but it still lets my burn music files off my hardrive just won't let me copy disks,I have to use Nero and burn it as an image first to the hardrive i don't understand why it thinks 1 of my devices is an image recorder. PLZ HELP |

I can still burn stuff off my hardrive like music and games, cause it's got 1 of my recorders as an HP DVD WRITER and another 1 as an image recorder |

I have just discovered the same problem with my laptop cd rewriter. I used to be able to burn straight to a CD from mp3's on the HD. I reloaded Nero 5 a few weeks ago after a plugin error message started appearing and since then the writer is listed as an image recorder and I have to burn an image first. I'm going to try and uninstall Nero and reload it again. I'll let you know if I have any luck!

Hi again Reece; no luck with reloading - I've been to the Nero website and there is a faq relating to this. They suggest updating to the latest version (it's free on the site). I've also got a chance to upgrade it to the next version using a relatives disks. I'll let you know what happens! |

I have been fighting the same problems for some time and have not been able to address it after hours of playing with all kinds of removal and registry tools. I also noticed that the image drive has permanently installed itself on my control panel and it just WON'T go away no matter what I have tried. Sorry I didn't give you an update on my situation! I'm such a lazy git!
I ended up using the relatives disk to upgrade to Nero 6. However I couldn't then get the slideshow software to load and emailed Nero for advice.
Nero replied to me after a few days, and suggested that I download the "General Clean Tool" - click on Support on the Homepage, then on Utilities, then Clean Tools in left column, then the General Clean Tool link.
The next page then gives some fairly clear instructions for using the tool.
I used it and when I reinstalled all the software it all worked OK. I think this may help with the image recorder problem as well. If not, try emailing Nero support.

I had the same problem so I downloaded the update for Nero 5 - you have to select Nero 6 and then get into support and updates for other versions. It was really hard to find and a LONG download but it totally fixed my problem!

I did have Nero 5.5 Express and could burn data files onto my CD's OK without any problem. I have up-graded my OS to Windows XP since but still no problem.
When I dowloaded Nero 7 Premium and did an install, my CD Device is now defaulted to an "Image Recorder" and I cannot choose the normal CD/R-RW option.
Also normally when I insert a blank CD into my CD ROM you always get a whirring noise as it recognises the media, but now I hear nothing!!!
I have been in contact with Nero help desk for months now and all they suggest is to remove all the old versions of Nero and re-load 7 fresh. Done all that and still the same problem!!!. |

I bought a Lite-on dvd burner that came with Nero 6. Everything worked fine for about 3 weeks. Then, all of a sudden, Nero won't recognize the burner, it only gives me the option of "Image Recorder". I can read Cd's and dvd's with it fine but cannot record. I upgraded to Nero 6 Ultra edition but nothing changed. I also contacted Nero technical support but still no reply. I've downloaded a couple of free dvd burning softwares and they don't recognize it either. The strange thing is when I tried recording with Windows Media player 9, it worked fine, but the next time I tried it says "WMP" encountered an unknown error" or something like that. This is all very frustrating. If ANYONE could help me figure this out I'd greatly appreciate it. |

Are we all finding Nero support a bunch of *******!!!!. Apart from Nero Premium 7 seeing my CD/RW as an Image Recorder all the time, it appears now that any data CD that I load into my drive is not recognised either. |

I am going to try the ASPI thing. . . . I have this Nero5 thing I installed and as soon as I did it none of my burning software actualy burns. . . . . Alc.%150 says it doese but I can put the disk back in and Xp says "blank CD" |

Peeps, I had the exact same problem, but I seem to have found a solution. Try downloading Force ASPI using any of the search engines and extract and install the files. After rebooting, Everything seems to be ok. BTW, I'm using Nero 6. Hope this helps. |

Ok, i feel like an idoiot
after installing nero, and stayin up all night trying to get the stupid thing to find my drive, spending countless hours on forums trying to find solutions, i realized that i havent restarted my computer since i installed nero. So try this, it worked for me. This was a pretty embarassing mistake since I am a tech for the local computer reapir shop. Oh well, at least I wont make that mistake again. Hopefully this works for ya! |

One comment and one question ...
I don't have Windows XP myself but I have read elsewhere that the built-in XP burner can 'grab' CD or DVD devices preventing other software like Nero from accessing them. This 'feature' can be disabled though.
I see mention of ASPI4.60 as a cure-all for various problems. Can someone tell me where to get the latest version please? I'll try a Google search in the meantime but, as a Nero user, I'd prefer to get a reliable source for this straight from the horses mouth.

I have the very same problem. I am running Windows XP with Nero Ultra Edition 6.6.0.6. I was able to burn data/audio/video up until two days ago. My machine was infected with Trojan virus that self-replicates itself two weeks ago but I've used Symantec to quarantine the affected system files. I have not used my DVD burner until this past Monday, I noticed that Nero only display the option for Image Recorder as the only available burner and not my usual MadDog DVD burner. I called MadDog and they said the problem is with Nero. I uninstalled Nero 6, re-installed it and re-booted the machine after installation and got the same problem. Then I went to Nero's website to download Nero 7 Demo edition, installed it and reboot after re-installation and still got the same freakin problem ... then I un-installed Nero 7 and re-installed Nero 6 again to no avail. I was up until 2:30am and finally I give up... I'll try to look for ASPI 4.6 but until then any advice will be greatly be appreciated. |

The driver can read data, but I can’t burn.

FYI anyone with this problem thinking reinstalling windows will solve it....it doesnt.
I had this problem with nero 5 and 6, and then i tried installing NTI cd copy software and had the same "image recorder" as my only burn option. This is so gay. I also had the problem with many upon many cd/dvd drives. I switched them out for different drives repeatedly to see if it changed anything and it did not. This is so gay. |

OK, guys, stop worrying. At least for me the solution was amazingly simple.
I though this has something to do with Windows registry so I took my regedit and ctrl+f: image recorder. There was only 1 result found and after staring those keys a while, I decided to delete the whole "Recorder" key (\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Recorder) so like I expected, Nero created a new (default) key and it now works perfectly.
I hope that will work with you guys too. |

If the information from Zhoriel, posted 9/06/2006 hasn't cleared all of your problems on the Image Recorder you might try the procedure that worked for me.
Go to Control panel, to system,to hardware open device manager check you CD-Rom.If you have a different reading other then DVD/CD-Rom drives with a red emblem. That's your problem. Cure, delete the cd-rom and reinstall it or reboot and it should reinstall doing the boot up.
It worked for me this afternoon and everything is back to normal I am running Nero 6 Ultra Light but I don't believe it matters which edition you're running.
The cause? It was working fine until I installed
Muisc Match and attempted to convert some Wav files to MP-3's although I did get a few converted I came away with the Image Recorder. I deleted the Music Match but nothing changed. Whether Music Match blew me away, I don't know but it has me convinced it did,so you can bet I won't reinstall
it to determine one way or the other.
But I hope this will help some or all you to get back on line with your proper recorder. |

I dont know if what has all been said fully helped u all but i had the same problem and all I had to do is goto start, programs, ahead nero, nero toolkit,then click nero drivespeed select cd drive for burning then set the read speed to what u want and thats it. I am also using nero burning rom |

Certain NERO versions marry the drive. More than likely, if NERO came with your burner, it will only work for that burner...therefor, if you upgraded your burner, the NERO probably will only give you a "Image Recorder" device. I confimed this with my issue. I re-installed a different NERO version, and it work - after finding out the drive in the PC was upgraded. |

Folks,
I just got mine to recognize my burner by doing the following:
Open Nero. Click the icon at the top of the normal Nero Burning Rom window that has an "X" on it (shortcut to Nero Express). Select your burner from the drop-down box. Return to regular Nero Burning Rom and your burner is now available. I don't know why this was necessary but it worked for me, so hopefully it will work for some of you. |

I am also unable to see its recorder as it is showing only Image Recorder and when I want to burn CD it fails and give save dialog box to save it in file.

pls help ureself and stop searching the solution as if it were a software problem. Nero just can't find your hardware. Updates, upgrades, messing in registry and installing tools wont help this. Second time I had this prob, solved it again by checking IDE cable/master,slave ..

My Problem:
- logged in with a user account - only the "Image Recorder" was showing in NeroExpress. Logged in as admin, cd drives were visible.
Solution:
- log in as admin and open C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Nero Toolkit\BurnRights - sEt burnrights to be "Everyone". Restart, log in with user account. |

I had the same problem as most of you folk - a) Nero would only display an image recorder and b) Nero 'support' would not or could not help. Now Nero is gone and burn4free is installed. Problem solved. |

I have nero 7 but I cannot burn c.d.s/dvd.s On checking I find that nero is set to image recorder and the option to change recorder is not operable, i.e. not highlighted. On the drop down box on the burn panel there is only the image recorder and not my Pioneer burner. Pleasa can anyone help. Many thanks, Phil |
