RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

I was having the same problem and i have found that this is usually happening because of the file names.
Because almost all type of portable memory use a "fat" system, the files with to much characters give this error.
If you want to have displayed all song information, first GENERATE TAGS, because all music players use tag information to display music file information, and after that RENAME THE FILES using a maximum number of 12-15 characters.
This problem with "remove write protection" should disappear, and everything it should work just fine :).
I was using Flash Renamer to rename the files using just enumeration style (001, 002, 003, etc), because it was a mass rename of about 1000 files, and this job hase been done in less than a minute :D.
p.s. renaming is one of the unique solution, in many problems with file errors.

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

if you have tried to unlock/unhold the memory card/adapter
but still can't remove the write-protection,

why don't you try this:

blow hardly to your memory card+adapter+reader and
make sure no more dust on them.

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

To all those swearing at the confused ones ... you're RUDE. Holy crap ... if people try your suggestions and they don't work, how can you insult them? I have a card reader and I've taken every single SD card I have and moved it from locked to unlocked and I still can't copy anything to any of the cards without getting that stupid message.

I am far from stupid. There is something that we need to do yet, and hopefully someone who is NOT rude can tell us what that is.

Thank you ... potty mouths !!!!

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

I'm having the same problem and the lock switch is not on. I was able to download songs into the memmory card but then about 3 weeks ago, I got the same message. I have tried everything, I've even bought a new card and its doing the same thing.

So no one has the answer to this, but a lot of people are having the same problem?

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

I went and bought a new card reader and it worked with the SD card. I guess somhow I accidently locked my card while it was in the other card reader and maybe it messed the card reader up. I don't know. But I can now transfer my music.

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

Listen, I was having the same problem. My laptop would say that the chip was write protected even though the chip was not on lock. I found that I had to use an external multi-card reader that plugs into the USB port. Then it let me copy music to the chip just fine.
Miss Megan on December 27, 2007
RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

If you have checked your tab to ensure your chip was not locked and also checked out settings... as a last resort- try putting a piece of tape on the lock/unlock chip, being careful not to cover the connection prongs- this will ensure that the chip is not being slid to the unlock position in your computer/reader. I messed with this and finally called tech support and they suggested this and it was successful-- also perhaps try another chip to ensure you do not have a faulty card or another reader to rule that out. Good luck!

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

Here is my issue.

I have an RCA Opal MP3 player. Bought it at Thanksgiving. I accidentally put protected MP4s on it and it will not let me remove them. It now says on the MP3 player that the files are "read-only". When I go into properties to uncheck the read-only setting, the box is grayed out and i cannot remove the setting.

Does anyone have an answer to my issue? I have been really frustrated with this.

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

Im not pretty good in English but i want to tell you guys about this problem. SO EASY!!! You have to switch the MMC,SD cards off (LOCKED) and plug it in and format it if it still appear " Write-protected" remove the mmc or sd cards switch on (unlocked) then you plug it in again and try to format the disk. Please repeat doing this, because sometimes computer is bullshit on you haha!. After you it's formatted you will be able to copy and remove all musics

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

If it doesn't work just try to repeat put it (locked) when computer found device, take it off immediately and unlocked it and plug it back agin and try to format while you doing that okay?. I mean you must format, after it formatted there you can instal and remove all files
Genius on June 20, 2008
RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

Have you heard of the solution where u switch the lock off and put clear tape over it? It works by the way.

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

Some MP3's copy and some get the "write protection" message. It has nothing to do with "hold buttons" or "lock switches", the problem comes fron Windows. I went back to my trusty old laptop with Win2000 and the problem disappeared. By the way, all the MP3's will still write to a data disc (CD-R). Everyone here is telling us they have the same problem. HELLO!! We all have the same problem, what we need is a solution.

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

I was unable to delete some of the songs on my mp3 player. Even though there was a lock on the device and it was unlocked these specific songs would not delete. I received a message saying that they were write protected. Yes, there is a check box saying that they were read only but the check box would not let me change it just like I read on many other posts on your site. I tried deleting everything the mp3 but everything deleted except these few songs.

Finally I right clicked on the mp3 player drive on the computer and found an option of reformatting. That is how I was able to delete these few songs.

Hope this helps someone else who might be going crazy over it like I was!

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

if you rip CDs to your hard drive, then copy to mp3 player, make this change: convert files to mp3 as opposed to wma files. MP3 won't automatically write protect as wma files will. Also when you set up folders on your hard drive with music files, then drag the folders over to your mp3 player, they are also read only. so, convert to mp3, and no folders. This seems to help.

btw I had to reformat my sony mp3 player and start over.

RE: how to remove write protection on mp3s

If you ave the following problem as me, then follow the instructions
and it should work.

Problem:
Was unable to delete folders from my mp3 because they were write-
protected. It had nothing to do with the hold/lock function. Everytime
I tried deleting a folder, it said I had to remove the write-protect
first. I was unable to do that on the properties tab also.

Solution:
The folder itself isn't write-protected but the contents are. Open the
folder and find all the tracks that are write protected (if you open
their properties you can see that they're protected but you can't
change this option). Simply delete those files one by one. If it
doesn't let you delete them, then try playing them from your mp3 while
its attached to your computer and it does this 'copying' function,
after which you can delete the write-protected files one by one. Yes,
it's slow but in the end you can remove the files.
