YES ! It works.
my cd-r/dvd on my notebook was disappeared with a code error nr. 41. There was no "upperfilters" or "lowerfilters" value in register. Afer running registrychecker.exe my device was alive and kickin'. Happiness !. Tanx chalky |

| spurlack on March 19, 2003 | RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
Well, I was afraid to do this, but it kinda worked. I never edited the registry and was advised never to do it. Man was I scared. This is a brand new machine!
My cd and cd/rw just disappeared today. I have no idea how. I tried the system retore option in XP, going back a week, but still no cd drives.
After a search, I found this message board and this thread. Wringing my hands, I found the lower filters file and deleted it. No upper filter file found. After rebooting, the cd/rw was back (YAY!) but the cd is still missing.
Now what? |

| Rockin_Kockin on March 23, 2003 | RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
if your cd-rom is in bios but not in windows it is most probably a conflict or a IDE connector fault. Even if it is in the bios it still can be faulty. Try the cd-rom in another IDE connector or if you dont have another one, just go buy an IDE card like me. it works |

Got the same error after installing NTI 6 Plat. The fix worked great! How the hell did you find this? I don't muck with the registry but would love to understand it.
Thanks a ton!

Hello, I have the same problem. Although, I didn't install anything.
I did put in a new video card, three weeks ago, and all of a sudden, a few days ago, the CDR/CDRW drive disappeared. The power works for it (it opens and closes), but it's not in explorer, and it doesn't read disks... I don't think it's the video card cuz it's been working fine up until a few days ago...
What's the problem??? Thanks. |

Kudos Chalky for the fix and Charles for the layman instructions! Can I buy you guys a round? For anyone esle like me that didn't find the LowerFilters & UpperFilters where Charles suggests, just do a keyword search for "filters" in the Registry Editor until you find ones that go with the dysfunctional unit. I also had to go into Edit, Permissions to give myself authority to delete the files. |

Hi,
I have the same problem, my CDRW (and sound card) have disappeared. I have checked the registry, and like many others dont have upper or lower filters present. I also downloaded the registry checker above and that didn't seem to do anything. Am I using it incorrectly? I have even done a system restore to before the problems - the upper and lower filters were present then - but removing them made no difference! Please help, I'm facing having to do a reistall and have no cd drive to bsck up all my information!
Many thanks,
Lee. |

Guys I have the same problem my dvd/cdrw is nowhere 2 be found.
I try deleteing the lower filter and it didn't work.
If anybody took care this problem another way please letme know, I'm even considering reistalling windows xp. But it won't even read that.... Please HELP, Thanks in advanced |
|
| Rockin_Kockin on September 25, 2003 | RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
if deleting lower filters dont work, it could be the IDE connector. If the IDE connector is 'faulty', the CD-ROM may still be in the bios, and not in Windows. Try switching the CD-ROM from one IDE connector to another, or try using different IDE cables.
NOTE: this method will not work if the problem came from any type of software.

| pito on September 25, 2003 | RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
DO THIS
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Once you have opened the last folder, you should see two keys on the right hand side ("Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters") which you may select and then delete by right clicking and selecting "Delete".
Alternatively, you could search for these keys instead of manually navigating to their locations. To do so, go Edit>Find and type either "Upperfilters" or "Lowerfilters" in the search field.
AFTER ALL THIS JUST REBOOT, AND THE NEW FILE WOULD DL AUTOMATICALLY best of luck |

This problem seems to be occuring way to often to be just a random occurrence...I had this problem last week on my home computer...and then again today with my laptop...
This fix is the only thing that worked...problem is when you type "winxp cdrom not working" :) in a search engine then finding this article among the many others was a challenge...
Thanks a bunch... |

This is what has happened to me. I had Adaptec on my Windows XP computer and was using it for the past month or so. Everything was working fine. So now I go to make a CD and the software has disappeared and so has my CD-RW! It says it's working properly but it cannot read any CD's.
Anyways, I have tried everything that was mentioned in this forum to no avail. I only found the lowerfilters - I deleted it. Nothing happened - still cannot find my CD-ROM.
Please can anyone suggest anything else?? I'm at my wits end!! |

| Jack Schidt on January 3, 2004 | RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
Installing the "HighMAT Extension to MS XP CD Writing Wizard for XP Professional" from Microsoft Update on top of a previously installed version of "Adaptec CD Creator 4.02D_D5" from the "Dell Application Restoration Disk Version 6.0" caused both CDRom Drives to vanish from a box we were working on.
We even reinstalled the OS - did a repair installation - to no avial. Finally I did a Google search and found this fix.
Thanks man! |

and still no cd |

| TaliesaN on April 2, 2004 | RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
OK - When I tried the fix listed here it didn't do squat for me
So I took Chaulky's advice and downloaded and tried the Nero Registry Cleaner, alas this as well did nothing
Here's what fixed it for me - you will need to know someone running Win XP and have a burner - go to their C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder and copy the cdralw2k.sys and cdrom.sys - take em home copy them over to your C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder (IMPORTANT : if there is another copy of the cdralw2k.sys i.e. : CDralW2K.sys - back it up elsewhere then remove it)
Hope that helps some of you out

Thanks a lot !!!
I was about to get mad about this...
BTW, I had the problem just after installing NERO 5.5.5.1, and the only other CD writing tool I had was SONIC Record Now ...
I guess if I try to install NERO again, the same problem would happen. So what should I do ? Uninstall RecordNow and THEN reinstall NERO ? does this procedure have any potential side-effect I should be aware of ? |

My CDRW disappeared 2 weeks ago. I tried Charles' solution of finding and deleting the Upper and Lower filters. But of course, my Compaq 5011CL doesn't have those filters. An additional search for these filters proved fruitless. I really don't want to start messing around with the registry and make matters worse. If any of you have a solution, please share and become famous ! |

I have a similar prob with win98. I can get the cdroms working again but the secondary ide controller gives a code 10 and they seem to disappear every few weeks. This is what I do to bring them back and its worked more times than not.
My computer > control panel > system > device manager. This is where I usually have a yellow exclamation point on my secondary ide controller. I click the properties of its parent (mine is intel(r)82801BA ultra ata storage controller). under settings if it says default I change it to both ide channels enabled. If it already has this i change it to default. Then it wants to restart so i agree but it seems to hang when is says windows is now restarting....so i hit restart button and it wants to load in safe mode beacuse it didn't load properly last time but i tell it to start in normal mode and all is back to normal with the cd roms. For a few days anyway...I've tried everything on this list and lots of others but can't find a permanent fix. |
