RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

This was posted a while back and I was looking for a solution to the same problem.

=================
Yes I Also have been having this problem but deleting the lowerfilter registry file brought my DVD-R drive back after installing Nero but now after that and uninstalling Nero I cannot use my original CD burning software (Veritas RecordNow) when I try to make any kind of disk to burn it displays "No compatible recordable or Rewritable devices can be found on your system"
==================

I eventually found my solution here: http://forums.support.roxio.com/lofiversion/index.php/t11369.html

I updated my PX engine using the update on that page and it fixed the promblem. (The PX engine somebody mentioned in this forum didn't work for me).

Wow thanks for this fix, my CD and DVD drives are working again :)

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

My registry does not have the upperfilter and lower filter values.
I ran a system fix that was unsuccessful but said my filter values were missing. Downloaded a registry fixer and also a fix from Doug Knox and nothing worked.
Any ideas on what values my registry needs?

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

blacklite098 and UnderGarth seemed to have this same problem as i do and everyone seemed to ignore them! When i went to the registry and deleted the upper and lower stuff and rebooted nothing happened!. And since noone on here or anywhere else wanted to help I took matters into my own hands. Sooo... i simply ran RegCure. and its all fixed! its free and like totally trustworthy. It found 1630 errors in my registry so yea...stupid windows! I SHAKE MY FIST VIOLENTLY IN THE AIR AT YOU! anyways try it if you got the same problem. just go to www.RegCure.com (sorry if I'm not allowed to post links, im new). Oh and the only problem is that it only fixes a couple unless you register...shoot...oh well...get a crack!

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

I have this problem but the solution you suggested didn't work for me. I backed up the file (just in case) on a USB and then did what you said, I deleated the Upperfilter and the restarting it all. But it's STILL NOT WORKING! I still have yellow exclamation makes on the device manager. Any know how to solve this without paying money out for a computer repairman?

CD-RW Has disappeared from XP and VISTA Ultimate

I have read each and every one of the suggested and those of results
about restoring this disappearing drive. Mine occurred after
downloading a Draw program costing $400 although it has taken me a
few days to become aware it had gone as I rarely use it. Nevertheless I
am confident it happened at that time.

I am told there is little or no difference but I have just bought Vista
Ultimate that arrived with no back up discs so I am frightened of losing
everything as I know nothing about the filters ans registry you mention
or how to access them.

If anyone canh give me an infants directory of how to access and fix
them I would be most grateful.

Thank you in anticipation of some good natured reader's help

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

I did it, doesn't work. But God, why? Who is the idiot at Microsoft, the company with billions in cash and the crappiest browser, who had masterminded this bug. He should be fired, and then shot, and burned. That son of a bitch ruined my movie tonight.

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

Mine too. I cannot even play a music DVD on my system, now, and cannot back up onto DVDs, which I have always done.
There's not a shred of Classic CD Creator, et al on my system, yet I'm protected like Fort Knox.

What do we do? Mine program was on my computer when I bought it. I may have it backed up on a thumb drive, though - will check, but . . .

This is absolutely insane!

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

I had used this technique before to fix this problem. But this time, after deleting the keys the drives are still no-show.

Now, I don't care if one driver stomps on one another. The OS (in this case Microsoft's Piece of Shit) has to be the moderator. At least give a goddamn option to clear out all conflicting drivers or configurations, and treat the drive like a newly installed hardware again. This Piece of Shit OS is so poorly written by a bunch of idiots who care not a bit about customer satisfaction.

How difficult is it to add a line counter in Notepad or WordPad, and support \n linefeed in Notepad? What the f* are they doing on that pile of cash?

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

Wow, Chalky's advice from 7 years ago still works! Deleting those two data fields in the registry did the trick for me, both my cd-rom and my dvd are back and working fine. Thanks again chalky!

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

All very well, but what if there's no sign of the DVD on the device manager?
Have tried all the above suggestions, (registry cleaner, deleting filters, disconnecting power and IDE cables, etc etc etc) but still no go.
I'm starting to get distinctly frustrated!

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

Thanks so much!
The original post made quite some years ago still works!
In my case I only found the lower filter, but once I deleted this and restarted my pc, then both of my drives (CD and DVD) were fixed.

RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP

I want to thank jonas for the fix of simply uninstalling the drive by
right clicking the drive in the device manager and then reinstalling
using the "add hardware" in the control panel.
For the past year I've spent countless nights googling fixes for my
missing cd-rw with error code 39. I was to the point of going back to
factory settings and losing everything just to get it back. I deleted
upper/lower filters, installed mcaffee, avast, resupreme, Windows
service pack updates, and countless other programs/drivers that were
said to fix the problem. Even microsoft's downloadable fix it program
couldn't fix it. I wish I would have simply uninstalled and
reinstalled which took 1 minute.
I'm pretty sure my problem started when I was deleting unwanted
programs to free up space and I deleted some cd writing program like
adaptec and it took my cd-rw with it.
You cannot imagine how happy I am to have finally solved this problem.
I hope others with this problem run across this forum for help.
THANK YOU!!
