Laserjet 4L Installation

I have an old Laserjet 4L which still prints superbly. Its programme/installation info is on diskette. I need to install it on a computer that does not have a disk drive, only a CD drive. Help!

RE: Laserjet 4L Installation

Hi D,

There are a few options for installing your HP Laserjet 4L printer driver on a computer that lacks a floppy drive.

Here are a few I can think of off the top of my head:

Option 1: via the home network

Copy the HP Laserjet 4L printer driver from the floppy disk to the hard drive of one of your computers that does have a floppy drive. Then, if this computer is on the same home network as the new computer you are trying to install the printer driver on, you can just copy the printer driver over the network to the new computer and then run the .exe installation file on this new computer.

Option 2: via USB key

If you have a USB (universal serial bus) port on a computer that has a floppy drive as well as on the new computer on which you are trying to install the printer driver, then simply copy the HP Laserjet 4L printer driver from the floppy to a USB key (i.e. USB stick) using the computer that has the disquette drive. Then move the USB key to the new computer, and access it on that computer (using My Computer). Then run the .exe installation file for the HP Laserjet 4L on the new computer.

Option 3: via a CD
If your old computer, which has a floppy drive, also has a CD writer/burner, then you can copy the HP Laserjet 4L printer driver from the floppy disk to the hard drive of this computer and then from there burn it onto a CD. Then you can insert this CD into your new computer and run the .exe installation file for the HP Laserjet 4L on the new computer.

Option 4: download a new driver on the internet
You could just download a new copy of the HP LaserJet 4L printer driver from over the internet, if your new computer has internet access. And actually, this may be the only option if your disquette only contained the printer drivers for an older operating system than what you are running on your new computer.

If you are running Windows XP, you can download the HP Laserjet 4L printer driver here:
HP LaserJet 4L Windows XP Printer Driver

If you are running Windows Vista, then there is no need to download any drivers (or to grab them off the floppy disk for that matter) as your operating system already comes with the necessary drivers for running the HP Laserjet 4L printer! It should just autodetect your printer and install it.

Hope that is somewhat helpful to you!
