cd-rom & dvd writer not detected under bios...what next?

Hiya folks,
I found this forum after a search on Goodle on XP not seeing two of my drives. I've been reading thru a bunch of similar post's, but haven't found anything that has solved my issue yet.

The problem: my cd-rom drive and DVD-write drive had both dissapppeared from my system while I was playing a cd-r audio disc earlier today. It was a double cd(I had one disc in each drive), and suddenly the music just stopped. I had been away from the computer when it happend so I have no idea if there were any extra 'noises' or 'pops' from either drive. All I know is when I heard that the music had stopped I went back to investigate, and saw that not only had everything stopped, but both drives had been deleted. Not seen under MY COMP. or Device Manager.

I went straight online here and started poking around in various forums for other people with similar issues. These were found, but I have had no luck with a solution yet.
As it stands: I am running Windows XP..home edition. Neither of my two drives (one cd-rom, one Memorex DVD-writer) are showing up under a: my computer, b: device manager,or c: bios (I have three other spots that read NOT DETECTED under my IDE controller. I think these would be for my floppy spot, and my two drives). Deleting both the upper/lower entries in my registry didn't affect anything, and I had seen another suggestion about deleting anything regarding my secondary IDE controller and let Windows rescan and redownload the proper 'stuff' for my two drives. Since I don't have a secondary IDE spot in my chain of command would I do this with my main one? Or is this something different and I'm (possibly) scre**d?
Sorry about the lengthy explanation but I would rather give too much info, then not enough in this case.
thanks!
