RE: Need Correct Drivers

I've downloaded the zip-file containing the HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B driver. But when I click on the HEX-file, the menu asks for a target drive. What do I type in there? (I've tried C:, but it doesn't accept that)

Where were you able to download the driver?

RE: Need Correct Drivers -- When Found then Install This Way

Brief instructions for installing the popular HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B so-called driver update:

The download should be an .EXE or .ZIP. It will probably be named R92814.exe or R92814.zip. When the download has completed and the filename is double-clicked, the contents of the file will be put into a folder called R92814. This assumes all the defaults are used when downloading and extracting.

There may be a glitch in the folder. There may be two folders: R92814 --> R92814. Follow the folders until three files are discovered: (1) dell_E108.exe, (2) jc5dlj12.HEX, and (3) Version.txt.

Double-click dell_E108.exe. A screen will popup (H-L Data Storage). The Target Drive is the desired CD Drive to be updated. The Source File is the .HEX file (see above). The screen needs to know (why it doesn't is just lazy programming) where the .HEX file is -- simple. Once the .HEX file field is filled-in via Browse, then the Upgrade button is ready to be pushed. The CD drive tray will eject -- the CD Drive is being talked to -- and the update will be doing-its-thing. Once completed, the screen's Upgrade button will dim, meaning the Close button should be pushed.

NOTE:
This is not a Driver update. It's a Firmware update -- the programming of the computer in the CD Drive is updated to work with WinXP better.

The driver for this CD is usually a generic driver (actually, group of drivers) where the CD is detected and WinXP installs generics because THERE IS NO SPECIFIC DRIVER FOR THIS CD (HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B) drive.

Good Luck!!

RE: Need Correct Drivers - INSTALLED FIRMWARE, STILL WON'T READ DVDS

I recently upgraded my computer's cd/dvd drive with the HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B out of an eMachines computer. My computer is custom built and not from Dell or anything. It works fine for reading/ripping/burning cds, but it won't read or even acknowledge DVDs. Any suggestions? (I'm running windows XP).

Thanks in advance

RE: Need Correct Drivers

Pinoy - great instruct :). Since this thread dates back a couple yrs, maybe is why I get an error when I install the firmware. It looks like my 7733 is not supported in this version.

RE: Need Correct Drivers

After a bit more checking - this hl dt st rw dvd gcc 4481b is a CD READ/WRITE & DVD Reader .... not DVD Burner. That is the first time I've seen such a stupid combo.

"The Target Drive is the desired CD Drive to be updated."

Sorry to be dense but would this be HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B? That doesn't work.

Hopefully this helps everyone who's dvd/cd doesn't detect CD's!

The files safe, but scan anyway (if you want). My CDrom wasn't detecting my runaway:twist of fate, nor Monkey Island 2 special ed for that matter, so I went looking and found the update. It's an Hitachi drive.
