mine still plays cd's, installs cr-roms, and will even allow my reboot cd-data discs to re-install xp on my computer. It WILL record a store-bought audio cd, but will not record files I've downloaded from download sights. I noticed a lot of forums related to those who download free music or try to copy store bought audio cd's. Could they be hijacking our computers, making us not able to BURN downloaded media? My cd thing is SONYCD-RW CRX215E5 and came pre-installed on a Walmart bought compaq presario. Any answers? I'll never buy another department store computer. I think I wasted over $800! |

I've contacted my computer maker hp/nec/compaq. I also got a reply from Sony who made the CRX215E5.Sony told me even though they made the cd-rw burner/player drive physically, Compaq or HP used what is called a "bundled software" package. It appears, as best I can guess, that if you have a computer that came with lots of pre-installed software (Mine has many I never use Compaq Organize, Easy Internet Sign Up, Turbo Tax, Digital Photography stuff) and you try to un-install it, you get a warning message that while un-installing will disable this software program, other programs might not act right. In-other-words, as much a pain in the you know what SOME software is, "bundled software" appears to work with many other programs. HP doesn't have a firmware up grade for the CRX215E5 but they did have a few downloads about 1) Not being able to open a stuck cd drive door while recording, and 2) A sound prblem. Well, my CRX215E5 door gets stuck in all of my record an audio cd writer programs, but only because so far, I still can't find a solution to this problem, we ALL ARE HAVING! So, I think like I told Sony and HP/Compaq, this is a widespread problem many web forum people like yous and me have. I think HP ought to realize that our CD burners all worked for a period of time like 6 months to about a year and a half, and now none of ours work. The company should offer a FIX to dozens if not hundreds of HP users who no longer can BURN audio CDs. Anyone with me on this one? |

The problem still exists after I try system restore, system recovery, and when I erased my entire hard drive using the 8 system recovery discs Compaq sent to me. My cd-rw CRX215e5 works in every way, except it still won't burn cds. The odd thing about system recovery is, the technology on the software and internet is updating so fast, some of these software programs no longer work when I try to connect to the internet. So maybe, even though our computers might be a few years old, they become obsolite. I wish someone from HP Compaq or Sony would read these forums and find that lots of people have the same problem. I guess there is NO solution to the CRX215E5 problem, because they've forgotten us! Bye for now Becca. Thanks for your reply. |

I have had mine for about 1.5 years and all tests failed that I ran on it. Compaq checked the test result codes I gave them and said I should replace the drive. I wasn't aware of the problems created by deleting some of the bundled software. |

I just wonder if whatever burns the cd's, whether it be some kind of lazor beam, or flame, or light; if it gets dirty. I've tried removing the drive, but I still could not get inside to see if it was dirty. Last time I took my less than 3 year old computer apart, it had lots of dust inside. Could DUST be the problem? Anyone know? |

I've tried erasing my entire computer using my 8 recovery discs. This took over one hour. Then, I tried cnahging write or burn speed...I hear the cd-r spinning, but sloooowly. It must be that our CRX215E5 drives, thoiugh everything checks out as working "properly" are NOT working. Mine still can install software, or burn a store-bought cd, but it won't burn MP3 files to audio CD-R or CD-RW discs. It works except won't burn a file to audio cd. Why then, can I insert an audio music cd, it will burn that? I'm about to dump my computer in the trash. I got it to burn audio cd's. I only worked really well for about 9 months, up unti SP2 came into the picture.Did SP2 screw up our cd burners? |

Yes i'm with you on that one {cryinwhencdwillnotbu}.I have some of the same symtoms as others with my sony cd-rw crx215e5.I have tried uninstalling/reinstall,driver reload,cleaning lens by disasembling the unit,testing the unit.Nothing worked.I can't even play a music cd or download any software.Someone is making $$ on this regected product.So yeah sony/compaq/hp should be liable for this mistake and offer some kind of cure. |

You know, I've contacted HP, and told them of this "blog" and dozens if not, hundreds of others, all with a similar CRX215E5 bu8rning problem. One HP help person told me he READ THAT on the web about many people having CRX215E5 problems. I thnk the problem is wide spread, and not only a few people have problems. It goes back to bundled software. Can automatic windows downloads like update for Realtec 97 driver, be confusing our burners, and the downloads are corrupting the computer's mind? I think, as I watch a shopping tv show today goes, they manufacture things one place, and major computer makers all slap thier brand names on it. We think we've bought real brand-named computer stuff, when really someone else makes these. (I used to write fishing articles and much fishing tackle is not made at the company or by the company whose brand name is on it. Yet companies make the big profits. The consumers get stuck with several year old useless pieces of "junk-puter" crap! Well, like many have said, maybe HP or SONY owes consumers a fix to the CRX215E5 woes of hunderds of us. Suggesting you don't waste anymore time replace the cd rw burners HP won't support that they use that model in there HP desktops, and sony doesn't recognize that model number only that it may be and after market cd rw burner. I tried uninstalling, firmware upgrades, rebooting,
disconnecting wires, contacting HP by phone and email, same for sony just decided to replaced it with a liteon cd rw burner for less than forty dollars works great wish I didn't waste all my time trying to save the drive unit. suggest the same to all that has had problems as me

Same problem, my CRX215E5 stopped working, it will not write at all, reads only a few software CD's and most music CD's. I talked to HP (useless) and Sony (said it was HP's problem). The drive fails all of the PC-Doctor diagnostic tests. Here is my solution - I ordered a new NEC drive and reminded myself never to buy another HP desktop, or Sony CD/DVD drive. I like to vote with my wallet.

I think the only thing you can do is just replace the CD writer with another one - that's how I solved my problem - after my HP/Compaq customer support idiots from India totally screwed up my computer by trying to fix my problem. I spent less than $30 at Walmart on a LiteOn CD ReWriter and it's working great now. I installed it myself, it was very easy. I did have to switch places with it with my DVD rom drive before it would work though, don't know why. I just found that out totally by experimentation. Who needs those idiots they call customer service techs??? |

I also finally gave up and bought a new drive. Then came the big problem of getting it out of my Pavilion 725! What a mess.. after removing half of the stuff inside, I still couldn't get it out. No help on how to remove the front panel! Any one know of secret tabs etc? It's of course plastic and I'm afraid of breaking the face.

Hi Betty, Mine is a Compaq Presario and I had the same problem. I was afraid to pop the front off because it didn't seem to want to come off very easily but my husband just gave it a little more force than I would have and it came right off. It popped right back on when I was done too. I guess the key is to not be afraid to break it! Good luck! |

No problem Betty. By the way, an FYI for anyone else experiencing problems - I was told by tech support that some CDs are not compatible with this CD writer. They will not read or write. I can't remember which ones they were now but you might want to call your tech support and find out just to make sure that's not your problem before you replace the CD writer - but guessing you still may have to replace... |

Guess I fell into this same Shoot!(insert ur own vowel for oo) Am going to load in a new burner. This pre-pack stuff is an bummer. Guess the manufactors want us to buy their shoot yearly. Leave to Macrohard to start this shoot. Maybe they got programs working to the point, the rest of the equipment has to be more mucked up to actually work with the further adventures of updates. As in my case, I haven't done the SP2 debacle. Better look to the papers for best deals for CD-RWs. |

I have the same problems as everyone else with the CD RW drive not working, ofter causing me to have to shut down the computer. It will usually work if I remove it in the device manager, and let windows reinstall it, but that is a pain to have to repeat everytime I want to burn a cd. HP/Sony owe us a fix! How can we get them to respond to our dilemma? |

I emailed Sony support re the problem with the CRX215E5, and got the following reply, FYI. I went to the "storage support" page suggested, and there is no update for this particular drive. I have not yet tried the solution they offered.

Have you ever tried to replace the IDE cable that is connecting the drive to the motherboard. One thing you can do to test the IDE cable is unplug it from the back of the Sony drive and leave the power cable plugged in. Then turn the computer back on and then see if the tray will open and shut as it should. If that works then we know the IDE cable is bad. If that does not work then I would go ahead and call in to 800-588-3847. We are here Monday - Saturday 8-8 CST.

wow i guess i was lucky i uninstalled every bundled software that came on my computer. but recently i just re built a computer but just wanted this one in there for when im making more then one copy of a disk and i just needed to find the drivers for it because its a pain in the a hole to find the drivers between 8 cds |

I serious think it was the Windows xp Service pack 2 That made the cd burner screwy. It was working fine before until then now, my drive won't even read a thing off of it and i mean nothing. Just the blinking light that is an error light. I give up on it. I think i'll just buy a new CD Burner at walmart or something when i can. But for all , the cd burner is a piece of s**t. So.. I hate bundled software.. |

It is eerie how we all have the identical problem occuring within a year to a year and half of purchasing the HP desktop with the bundled software. No-one can convince me that the software manufacturers were unaware of this side effect...remember the case of the Pinto cars. This is cost-benefit analysis at its best! A bunch of customers will be upset that after a year and a half they have to replace the entire CD-DVD drives, but most will likely get so frustrated with the process that they will never pursue legal redress....it is not right! This smells "class action law suit" all over it! Anyone knows a good lawyer? |

Unbelievable!!!! I have been haveing the same problems as discussed here. It used to work but now won't burn at all. It hangs, I have to turn off computer to get the drive to stop making that noise. (as if it was doing something yea right) I have tried many different brands of cd's I have tried different burn sofware. I have done all tests. The only thing I haven'e done is trash it. Which will come soon. I wanta be involved with any lawsuits on this BULL. |

It is interesting to read all about your problems. My Sony CD_RW crx215e5 formats, reads and burns CD-RWs but does not read any music or data/pictures CD (neither self-made nor bought). The drive tries to speed up but then it slows down immediately. Any ideas? |

I had basically the same problem. It worked fine for the first year or so, and then recently, it just would not recognize a CD. I could put a blank CD in, and it would just keep telling me to insert a blank or appendable CD. It would read an audio CD somewhat, all though it was very slow, and skipped alot. I fixed it though -- at least for now. I think the resolution is to simply disconnect it, boot, and then shutdown, reconnect it again, and boot, so the system recognizes it as new hardware. I also actually opened it up, and cleaned the "eye" with a q-tip and alcohol. I'm not sure which (or both) of these fixed it, but it's fine now.......crossing my fingers. |

I had the Sony CD-RW crx215 in my home built PC. It died just like all the other posts indicate, so it had nothing to do with HP. The Sony unit is just simply junk!!! I replaced the Sony with another brand and it works just fine. I think the fact that the Sony unit died in an HP unit had nothing to do with the fact that it was in an HP. Sony is just plain junk!!! Just like their CD's. |

I have a Compacq Presario with a sony cd_rw crx215e5
It has worked fine for about 1 year but I can no longer burn a Data CD. I have tried using the Windows XP burner also DeepBurner. It goes through the steps but gives a "Writer error [not ready{ cannot write media incompatible formated]] and spits out the cd. Have tried several cd and settings with no luck. I can also view these CDs using the drive properties, they show as normal. It was intermittent but now it has stopped working. I still can read all music or data CDs and play songs etc.
Please advise. |
