You know Sony use to be a good name brand, Now they suck! And if this is because i deleted something that i did not need or use, that sucks too. They should not link all that stuff together.Or at least should tell us what not to delete

I'm yet another of you poor unfortunate many. Same problem. A year and a three months, plays music cd's, installs some new software. Burns no more. Reads my data disks no more. Several days on this ... No more!!! Bye Bye Sony.

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

Has anyone tried F10 instead of the rescue cd's? On a compaq F10 uninstalls then reinstalls windows and puts the computer back to its original factory settings.. HOWEVER, YOU LOOSE EVERYTHING...
Its an idea anyway.. I have 2 identical compaqs and the burner I hardly ever use is the one that quit. The other one has been used and abused by three teenagers and their friends and is working great..
I think I'll dispose of the broken one by running it over with my one ton Dodge. And purchasing an extended warranty on the new burner..
Good Luck to everyone!!

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

I am glad that I found you guys... I corrected the problem by buying a CD-RW/DVD combo drive made by LITEON at walmart. It cost me $40 dollars and now I have a DVD player! The installation was fast! During installation... realize that you dont have to rip off the spring door that is presently covering the expansion port. In fact the expansion port door cover works quite well with LITEON's combo drive. the Pavillion's face remains undamaged, and uses the actual button on its front to mechanically press the LITEON CD_RW/DVD door opening button! Also LITEON's green LED lines up with the clear strip on the Pavillion's face, so that it looks like it came with the computer. When installing the combo drive, (on a a300n) It is important that you go against the instructions that come with the LITEON combo drive, and make the combo drive a slave drive, and keep the original CD/RW as the master. I have found that some CD's still work in the original Sony drive (like my Bible CD)... So simply swap the master drive with the slave drive in the instructions. And the best part is that after you physically install the combo drive, the computer recognizes it and requires no drivers to be installed...

Look at this whole experience as a positive one, because you now have a DVD player, and you can rent a movie to reward yourself for the hell that HP and Sony have put you through :)

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

(When I said that "it" looks like it came with your computer, I was refering to the idea that the pavillion spring door covers the LITEON face, and does not change the appearance of your computer)

Also...

(When I said "swap" in the previous post... I was not suggesting that you change the position of the original Sony drive... I was refering to reading the instructions swapping the settings and jumper wires treating the Sony as the Master, and the LITEON combo drive as the slave)

need some help, I did not properly install the harddisk and think that may have caused some errors, since then I have removed the hard disk and tried to reload the cd-rw. no luck!

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

I just paid $10 for a used one from the Goodwill, I will have to test this thing out more then usual I assume? I have Nero, but what should I try to acid test it? I have had my Compaq OEM drives die soon after buying a NIB PC, but that was replaced by the seller, so it worked out great. That HP Compaq is running Samsung DVD and DVD burner drives and my older Deskpro inherited the CD burner. I picked this up to have the option for another desktop PC though I prefer to have a slimline for a laptop, a combo or DVD burner for my Dell. I picked up a USB 2.0 NEC drive for that. I rarely have had to use drivers for disc drives!

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

I'm having a similar problem.
What happened was something happened with my copy of XP and my girlfriend's father had to format and reinstall, and now the drive will read discs but not burn.
When I try to use Alcohol 120%'s burning wizard, it says there's no media in the drive and I'm positive there is.

HP and Sony need to get on the ball about this.
Consumers shouldn't have to stand for shoddy drives and even shoddier help from the companies which utilize said drives.

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

All right, it goes without saying that if I'm posting here, then I have a problem. The exact same problem as everyone else, coincidentally...
My Sony CD-RW CRX215E5 died once I performed a disk clean up to rid my machine of unnecessary program files. It won't play CD's of any sort, much less acknowledge the fact that there's a disc in the drive at all.

I thought corporations chose the automobile industry as their target for cheap ineffective parts that always needed replacement... Seems to me that it's spreading to every aspect of our mechanized world... Generally, the program files that come pre-installed on our PC's are unnecessary ones that may require some registration fees or update fees... And it would seem that Sony recognized the fact that nobody would use these rip-off programs, so they decided to link their Sony CD_RW crx215e5's key programs to those junk programs, that way the drive fails at two points: A) After a year or so of use, B)After deletion of bundled files. Sony ripped us off big time, and get our money anyway you look at it!

Solution: Avoid Sony. When purchasing a new pc, inquire as to who the manufacturers of the internal hardware are! If Sony has parts in there, look elsewhere.

Go to BestBuy, compUSA, or some other retailer with a good reputation, for a good buy on a decent Drive.

Thanks for nothing, Sony.

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

I recently had the a problem for the Sony CD_RW crx215e5 where it wouldn't read or write to CD-Rs. I am using a Compaq Presario desktop where this was the bundled drive. I have been using a different DVD drive so it hasn't caused me any pain. However, I finally decided that it was time to see if I could fix the problem. I went to the HP support site and downloaded the latest driver. I used the floppy option to save the file and update the drive. For my system, this worked fine. I just burned a CD and read from it. So, for now, it seems to work. I tried the CD option described on the website to store the update. But that didn't work for me even though I was using a different CD writer. I probably didn't have the boot options set correctly to find the update. I was lucky that I still had an old disk laying around.

Looks like I'm going to get a new CD burner this weekend. We just upgraded our RAM and now I can't burn CDs. I have some photos I need to back up. I didn't realize this is so common.

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

I currently ripped my own compaq system appart and decided to part it out and use some new stuff to build my two neices a comp eahc. In inserting the crx215e5 into my older neices system. Installing Vista Ultimate and going about the setup process. The drive does not even initialize and start. The line of sony drives and products along with the hp/compaq lines all suck. I myself am a IT administrator for a small construction company. And an avid tech nerd. If you are looking for an inexpensive drive, from a great company. Please check out Pioneers line of DVD WR/R combos. read all cds, dvds, and burns both. The software bundle is very light and works grandly. built 25 sytems with it so far and will build more.

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

This thing is a flippin piece of crap!!! I just read all the entries from the last 3 years and it appears that it worked once...and then never again. Lovely how you spend your hard earned money and then no support, no way to get is fixed. I've done everything that everyone else in here has tried. Bottom line...income tax refund just came in and I'm buying a new unit.
Screw off HP & Sony!

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

HP Compaq Presario S4000NX w/Sony CRX215E5... I have had
the same issue also. The component manufacturer bears some
blame, but HP/Compaq used their component. I think they bear
the responsibility to sell systems that have been tested and will
be supported. I've spent a lot of time trying to get this to work.
No luck. Oh yeah, and I can't burn cd's due to cd/dvd problem,
plus can't make floppies due to floppy problems. Definitely a
pain to even try to fix.

For my own use, I'm now a mac convert for sure. But still the
kids' pc is running into problem after problem.

I worked ten years at HP myself, 1981-1991. Very sad to see
the quality of HP equipment drop as it has.

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

I agree that this model is just junk. Now Sony does not even list this model as ever being produced by them. I guess they are ashamed of it. My unit came with the Compaq Presario SR1010NX that I purchased from Brands Mart in Miami. I always thought that Sony was a great brand for sound machines. What happened?

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

Well why should they care they have our money already! But not from me again.
I was going to try blowing out the dust and try the alcohol thing but I see that would be a waste of time. I have only used the recording portion a few times for photo CD"s. I agree the Sony CD rom is apiece of junk, and I will be buying a replacement CD Rom tommorrow and it won"t be a Sony!

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

Ok, this is really friggin' ticking me the hell off. I've tried
everything but yank the damn drive out of the case. I've tried to adjust
the registry, by deleting the filter(s) high/low. I'll just spend the
$30.00 for a new drive and put it in myself. Sony you are simply
outsourcing everything just like ALL USA companies. Word to the
troubled. Don't waste your time trying to F**k with this drive. I've
fixed them before, but not this piece of trash. Install one yourself.
They're easy.

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

This must be an "expected issue" with all models as my Pavilion's instruction manual explains how to uninstall & "force a reinstall" of the SONY CD-RW CRX215E5. (see pg. 75)

I was lucky enough to have had a DVD-R installed before the CD went out so I could still use discs, but it would be nice if ALL of the parts I paid for were in working order. :(

RE: problem with Sony CD_RW crx215e5

Over the past few years I have had a lot of trouble with this Sony Drive... I thought, like others, that it was connected to Windows Service Pack II update... (the CD and DVD ikons disappeared from "my computer"). Recently I took the drive apart (I'm good at taking things apart) and hooked it up without the case. One problem seemed to be an intermittent spin drive motor. The disk just sits there still as a church mouse and the read/write head searches up and down for data. I think I'll just do as suggested by others and get a different drive. My Compaq has been a good computer. It has served me faithfully for the last four or five years. I'd buy another one in a second... and I've always liked Sony products. They make high quality equipment. I think the problem with quality is that people want to buy the cheapest things out there and at the point of sale they don't look at anything but the price sticker. In such a marketplace, how can anyone wonder why these big companies must sell poor quality products just to stay competitive.

Wow. Glad to have found this thread. Now, I can quit wasting my time trying fixes. Sony and HP should be ashamed. No mas! Dell only for me. Have several in our office, and they all work great. Any problems have been addressed immediately by Dell.
