RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

I just got this player today and did have trouble getting it to work. The crux of the matter is I followed the advice of loading the software and formating the drive with the label root and restarting my machine. And lo and behold it now works. The manual is only useful for wiping your bottom with IMHO.

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

I bought one of these worthless pieces of crap and every time I have tried to play it after the first 15 minutes of having it it keeps turning off. Eight hours battery life? Eight minutes more like. I really hope someone can shed some light on what might be causing this but the hardware production seems to be very, very sub-standard.

By the way, to the gimp Paul who asked people to read the manual, you spell 'thoroughly' with only one 'u'. Read a fucking dictionary before you go preaching to others about what to read, you complete tit.

Cheers all.

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

I think the last few messages were worthless. Pedantry about a poster solves nothing.

Paul has a point, although admittedly badly phrased and spelled.

The acronym RTFM is popular for a reason - no-one ever reads the instructions for things before starting to whine.

A basic understanding of how MP3 players and USB connections work is necessary in order to get your product working properly.

My pocket review of the IMP-11 MP3/WMA player:

I have the 256Mb version, and am running Windows XP Home and Pro plus Ubuntu Linux. I have had no problems with the player on any of these platform. I have not had to install anything from the CD. From my experience of MP3 players, I know that subdirectories can order the files, but CANNOT be more than 1 level. This is also stated in the manual I have for my player. I copied 6 albums worth of WMAs to the player and they worked fine. Windows Explorer was ideal for the task. I have deleted folders and created new ones with no problem.

Negative points are that the player queues MP3 files before WMA files, so if you have a compilation made up of both, then it will NOT play them in order. Also, it plays the albums in the order they were uploaded to the player, not in alphanumeric order. This makes it a bit more fiddly. Another small niggle is that there is no way to quickly skip through subdirectories (a function that my CD/MP3 player had, and it was cheaper than the stick). Finally, I do agree that the battery life is not as good as it says on the box. In order to maximise battery life, leave the equaliser set to normal and do the basic thing of taking the battery out when the player is not going to be used for a while. And use Duracell batteries.

On the plus side: the player is compact and attractive with buttons that are easy to access. The rocker switch is a cool feature, but it is a bit fiddly to push without moving to the side. It is sturdy, well manufactured and robust (I've already dropped it twice). The sound quality is actually better than my CD/MP3 player using the same headphones (I don't think much of the headphones that come with it), and the equaliser settings do make a real difference to the sound.

I like this product, and am concerned that so many people have had a problem with it, but I notice that the 256 version isn't mentioned much in this thread. All I can suggest is that (as Paul said before being shot down) you read the manual or quick start guide before using it, don't use protected MP3s and make sure that you put things in the root directory.

Ensure your computers drivers (esp. the USB drivers) are up to date, especially on non-XP systems. Do not rip your CDs straight to the player. Don't mix MP3 and WMA files if you can help it. Use Windows Explorer (or the Mac/Linux equivalent) to add and remove files.

Thanks for reading.

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

To clairfy,

Paul's comment demonstrated his own ignorance as the instructions that came with this MP3 player were very bare.He was obviously not preaching from an educated perspective regarding this particular piece of hardware, hence my (admittedly reactionary) response.

No offence, Dave but were the instructions somehow more detailed with the larger memory machine?

As a general rule, people should read instructions more thoroughly but there was little of substance in the manual that came with the basic IItronics player.

Since previous posts alluded to the poor instructions provided, Paul's time might have been better spent reading them before offering blind criticism that does little but patronise and add to people's frustrations.

On to more constructive matters.

If it is of any help to those who may have been experiencing a similar problem to that already stated of the power repeatedly switching off, I refer to the earlier post of Onka, and Dave's advice of a similar thread.

The battery runs down when I leave it in my IItronics player, and the SEALED battery that came with the one I bought lasted a grand total of 15 minutes!

I have found that by removing the new AAA battery, after use, and replacing it again when I want to use this device, it now works fine.

It is a great deal cheaper than an I-pod, so all in all problem solved satisfactorily.

The device offers excellent sound (and the extra bass doesn't really hurt the life span that much). Follow the battery removing / replacing ritual and the machine is quite respectable all things considered (I never thought I'd be saying that!)

This does still point to a very poor piece of design, and I agree, Dave that the ergonomics are quite clever, but IItronics need to work on the basics.

Regards,
and have a great Christmas and New Year everybody (even Paul!)

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

Got a 512mb version for my daughter from Argos. Tried downloading songs onto it - took 3 songs and said the memory was full. !! After checking via " my computer" and " properties "the memory was split into 2 drives - only 17mb on drive H with the balance on drive I. Despite downloading loads onto drive I it will not recognise the drive and states there are no other files to play apart from the 3 on drive H. Needless to say it's going back to Argos asap.

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

Me and my sister got the 128mb and 512mb MP3 players for Christmas. After much struggling we managed to load some songs onto them, though they refuse to play WMA format. Even though it clearly states that they will play WMA files, the 128mb one says "format error" and the 512mb one says "file error". Should I try and sort things out or just take them back to Argos?
Please help!

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

as i said i got the 1gb one for crimbo. it was fine until i cleared the memory off it to put different songs on it. when i went to put a new folder in it it says:

unable to create the folder "new folder"
the directory or file cannot be created

also, if i look att he memory usage it says: 10001gb 66% - when the mp3 player is empty.

what can i do?

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

Hi,

I also got mine for Christmas. I tried upgrading the firmware but now it just comes up with a blank blue screen every time I start it up. There is no way, to my knowledge, to reverse the new messed up firmware upgrade, so my question is, HELP! Where do I find the original firmware? It's not on the CD nor is it "backed up" as the help file would suggest.
Katie on December 26, 2005
RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

I would just like to say that I have worked out that "syncronising" the songs to the IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player, through Windows Media player 10 seems to work.
It not only gives you what percentage of the player memory you are using, but also means that it will play WMA file types.

Just thought you lot may want to know that, because it has saved me taking mine back to Argos.
Knowing my luck though, you prob already knew that.

Good luck to everyone, hope you all get your problems sorted out!

HELP!!
I have a slightly different problem andwonder whether anyone can shed any light on it.

Any ideas?

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

I got mine for christmas and the buttons didn't work. I took it back to argos and they gave me another one (with buttons that do work... Hoorah!)

Then I got 127mb (ish) worth of songs onto it and it tells me it can't take anymore. Odd seen as I bought a 512mb and it is clearly displayed on both box and the mp3 player itself.

I checked the remaining memory and it says i have 380mb left! But just wont let me put anymore songs on there. HELP would be much appreciated- am sorta at the end of my tether with it!!!!

Cheers

To scouseindehouse:
I don't think you can charge batteries through the usb port, though I may be mistaken.
You could always buy rechargable batteries and a charger for them. I saw some going cheap in B&Q the other day.

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

Hi, a few people have mentioned the problem about the mp3 player only showing 99 songs when there are 200 or so actually on it. Any answers yet??? or im gonna burn the damn thing
Brett on January 2, 2006
RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

No-one has yet mentioned the s1mp3.org site. It seems the IItronics iMP-11 is based on a generic Chinese mp3 player. There's lots of tech info on this site, all put together by users as far as I can tell. The firmware upgrade stuff looks rather involved. Although there are tools to backup (and even modify) the existing firmware there are no guarantees you'll be able to restore it after a bad upgrade. I'm going to steer clear as mine it working perfectly so far.

Regarding the 99 songs, the player can only recognise 99 songs per folder and cannot deal with subfolders. Bear that in mind and you should be alright.

Cheers

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

File Error :
Had this problem earlier, I put in .wmv files and wma files together which was fine as it managed to fit but when i loaded it up it recognised every single file as .wma and said there was a file error ( not suprised as it tried to read wmv files as wma files )

Then tried a single mp3 and it worked fine

Now i've found out you need to transfer it with media player, just get the list of songs you want and click queue it up or make a playlist of your own and set it to copy to device or cd and it'll work fine

btw i have a 128 MB Mp3 / wma player

hope this helps

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

RH :
what format are your songs ? when converting my music I found a format which made the sound quality slightly worse than mp3 but turned a 3MB (in mp3) song into 54MB! So try converting them into WMVs because it basically cuts the memory used in half (compared to mp3) + it doesn't sound too bad. Then use media player to load them onto your player and it should work fine

(I used imTOO to convert the files [its a great multi format converter] although the trial version only allows 5 mins its enough for most songs)

sidenote: I love the headphones this came with =)

RE: IItronics IMP-11 MP3 Player

neil :
I hate the lock too but basically you have to push it until it clicks (mines seems to have 3 points an unlocked and 2 locked)

a tip is to push it from the side with a key or a ruler or something (nails here lol) because the top of the hold button doesn't give you enough grip to slide it off of the hold because it seems to be abnormally stiff

side note: i think the iPod is a bit too expensive for what it is although iTunes is very nice...

also: this player looks quite nice too with easy to access buttons (apart from the hold + the clicky mode button takes some getting used to but its great for changing songs) recording is also a nice feature which wasn't mentioned in the argos catalog (i think...)

i got one of these a few days ago, and i had no problem putting the music files onto it, but when i turn it on i can't get the music to play. i've read the instructions and it says 'a prolonged play to turn the player on, and press the play button once to play', when i press play the screen lights up but it doesn't actually do anything. this is on the main menu by the way, and i can't get into any of the other options either. i did get it to play the other day somehow, but as soon as i put more music on i can't get it to work again.
anyone hace any idea what i might be doing wrong? (yes i do have the volume turned up etc)

Put CD in, and in windows media player (i've got version 9, think 10 is a bit different) go onto copy from cd and ur cd will come up. Before you press copy, u have to go onto tools>options>copy music tab and change the location to ur mp3 drive. and then press copy. voila. should work

Hi Guys,

Just got that iMP-11 (128mb) from my son for Xmas and although I managed to load WMA files downloaded from the internet, I have the famous "file error" message on the mp3 screen. I then tried as suggested above to sync the files via Win Media player, and a nice error message also appears on the PC this time (Windows Media Player has encountered an unknown error). I did RTFM the paperwork, no luck. I will try next to burn a CD first and then try to rip it back to the mp3, but in the mean time, if you guys have an idea, i'd really appreciate! Cheers
