RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

I have a Dell Latitude C610 X86-Base PC Laptop. It has X86- family 6 Model 11 stepping Genuine Intel ~996, and 261 261,500KB (261mbyte) of Ram, at least 5 gigabytes (GB) of available free space on the hard disk what ever this mean. I like to upgrade to Windows XP with making any changes to hardware, memory, cpu etc. Is this possible? –Thanks,

Note: These are the minimum requirements from Microsoft for basic functionality. Actual requirements vary, depending on the system configuration and the programs and features that you choose to install. If you are installing Windows XP over a network, you may need additional available hard-disk space.

The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP Home Edition are:
· Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
· At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
· At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
· CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
· Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
· Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution
· Sound card
· Speakers or headphones

RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

The C610 I was given had win 98se on it. It had 256Mb ram , no wireless card and 20 Gb HD. I installed XP Pro on it.
I bought and installed this ram. http://www.pcmemorystore.com/Dell-Latitude-C610-ram.htm I am up to 512Mb ram now. I installed this wireless card http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BHZFV8/ref=oss_product
Here is the link for all dell drivers for XP. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&ServiceTag=HQT2511&SystemID=LAT_PNT_P3C_C610&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
The battery was bad so I had to purchase a new one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0026K9L1Q/ref=oss_product
My total cost was about $65 dollars for all of this. I also updated the BIOS like was mentioned in this thread. I will probably up grade the HD later to this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RHNPDU/ref=asc_df_B000RHNPDU1329253?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=shopzilla_rev_371-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B000RHNPDU

RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

I just got one of these c510's as a bad buy from ebay ( it was advertised as an x1) but I have scrapped the bios admin password, windows xp was running very poorly, I tried ubuntu 9.10 with awful results, but formatted the harddisk completely as I think the disk had the nimda virus. I am now running ubuntu 10.0.4LTS and have ordered 512mb of ram and a 1.2 ghz pIII to replace to rubbish celeron 1.06. It doesn't even seem as quick as my daughters C450 with a 650 P3.

There are still excellent tools to delete the service tags and reset the bios in order to remove silly passwords.

I really couldn't get the wireless card I took out of an old inspiron 510m to work in windows it is a 2200bg, the windows devices alway showed it as (error code 10). although both ubunutu 9.10 and this much better 10.0.4 run the wireless networking immediately with no effort from me at all.

I know that people might say "ubuntu why use that" well most laptops are used for simple email and internet, and it is ideal for that, I even use it for my work support laptop by simply connecting to my windows pc in my office via VPN.

I will let you know whether the memory and cpu upgrade is okay.

RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

hey I put in an SL5CL (it was supposed to be a SL5CT) I can confirm it works perfectly well and runs at 800mhz unless under load when it switches to 1.2Ghz, ubunutu shows me this.

Sometyhing noticable is that the C510 now twlls me it is a C610 does this mean that all of a sudden it can address 1gig of memeory, instead of the C510s 512mb?

I actually really like this although it is nothing like the x1 which I was supposed to be buying.

RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

Hi E/one !
Thanks to all those guys who have posted the best of information on the said models. Guys - you are great !!
I have C510 and as you guys said I first upgraded the BIOS to A16 and sure enough it accepted the 160gb HDD so I am sure it can take upto 320gig anytime.
Guys I need the driver for "Intel Internal Wireless LAN Card 2200BG WM3B2200BG" I just bought and have searched the web even at Dell, Intel and is unavailable and am unable to find one so would really go head over heels if some of u could please zip and send me the same to : mozezstar@gmail.com.
I also require the driver for the MODEM "PCTEL" P/N :0E828 that is currently installed on the m/board and cant find either at dell or any other website.
Guys please help.................

RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

What do I have to do, that my DELL Latitude C510 accepts 1,2GB RAM, that the C510 accepts the two, new 512MB SDRAMs 133MHz 144 Pins SODIMM, taken out of an C610 ?

Do I have to upgrade BIOS to A16 Version , only ?

Do I have to replace the Celeron CPU, also ?
Is it necessary to get a new CPU SL5CL 1,2GHz Pentium III M Intel ?

Thank you for your help.

RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

Hi Stuart or anyone,

How do you get rid of the BIOS password? I am trying to change the boot order so that I can upgrade from Win2000 to Win XP using a CD, but I can't change the boot order (boots from hard drive) and assume the BIOS is locked. I don't have a password. Any ideas?

RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

I have the C610, upgraded Bios to A16, it now has 1GB RAM, working okay.
I plan to get a larger HD, but the DVD drive is not working. In control panel the icon is yellow, but can't find an updated driver. Anyone know where to download this? It is listed as HL-DT-ST-DVD_ROM_GDR8081N_0108.

RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

Hello and THANK YOU! to all who have taken time to donate your expertise. : ) My latitude c610 has a pentium 3 1.2ghz, w/1g mem, and a 16mb video mem, hd is a 2g. I've found a USB PCMCIA for 17.00 that boasts these features:
Two USB 2.0 Ports
Data rate 1.5/12/480Mbps
Compliant with USB Specification Revision 2.0
All Downstream facing ports can handle High-Speed(480 Mbps), full-speed (12)Mbps), and low-speed 1.5Mbps transaction
Tiered start topology supporting up to 5 tiers and 127 devices, no cable segment exceeding 5 meters
Two 1394 Ports (one 6-pin and one 4-pin)
Fully supports provisions of IEEE 1394-1995 standard for high performance Serial Bus and the P1394a Supplement
Support up to 63 devices that can be run simultaneously on a system
Plug-n-Play
Supported self power mode
Supported Microsoft Windows 98/98SE/ME/2000/XP

Problem is I know absolutely nothing about this thing and what that cool looking port thingy on the back left side does... : ( Can any of you guide me on that please?

Best regard,

Judy

RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

I read all upgrades and problems, now it's my turn. While fooling around my souped-up C610 some stupid happening hit my box and now, all-of-a-sudden, I can't get in. Right! I can't open it up, can't get back in...Crazy, screen reads "type in administrator password then press, Enter."
This lap has been with me 7 years and have no idea what my password is, and it's filled with much needed college papers. My thesis was to be read in 3 weeks from now. I need HELP. What do I do?

RE: Upgrading Dell Latitude C510/C610 Laptop

Hello everyone! I have the Dell Laptop C610 with 256 MB SDRam 133MHz from Samsung , a few days ago I bought a second 256MB SDRam 133MHz from Infineon, but when I start it says that i have put a bad or incompatible Ram. When i put the Infineon Ram alone, the laptop doesn't even start. Does it work only with two identical Ram or could this be an other problem? The Infineon Ram is OK. My Bios is updated to A16 from the Dell site. Can someone help me please or give me any advice?
