RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
Thanks a lot !!!
I was about to get mad about this...
BTW, I had the problem just after installing NERO 5.5.5.1, and the only other CD writing tool I had was SONIC Record Now ...
I guess if I try to install NERO again, the same problem would happen. So what should I do ? Uninstall RecordNow and THEN reinstall NERO ? does this procedure have any potential side-effect I should be aware of ?

My CDRW disappeared 2 weeks ago. I tried Charles' solution of finding and deleting the Upper and Lower filters. But of course, my Compaq 5011CL doesn't have those filters. An additional search for these filters proved fruitless. I really don't want to start messing around with the registry and make matters worse. If any of you have a solution, please share and become famous !

What do i do!! Its driving me crazy!! I have tried everything on the 3 pages of this post

| RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
I have a similar prob with win98. I can get the cdroms working again but the secondary ide controller gives a code 10 and they seem to disappear every few weeks. This is what I do to bring them back and its worked more times than not.
My computer > control panel > system > device manager. This is where I usually have a yellow exclamation point on my secondary ide controller. I click the properties of its parent (mine is intel(r)82801BA ultra ata storage controller). under settings if it says default I change it to both ide channels enabled. If it already has this i change it to default. Then it wants to restart so i agree but it seems to hang when is says windows is now restarting....so i hit restart button and it wants to load in safe mode beacuse it didn't load properly last time but i tell it to start in normal mode and all is back to normal with the cd roms. For a few days anyway...I've tried everything on this list and lots of others but can't find a permanent fix.

Hi, I actioned the Roxio fix (on their website - deleting the two registry keys) - but now my PC refuses to recognise either my keyb. or mouse!!
This is a total disaster as you might imagine because I can't even f8 into safe mode.

OK same story different person >> ME ! (lol)
woke up turned on the ol computer and to my horror,
my cdrw and dvdrw WERE GONE !
"Hello Houston, we have a problem..."
well i did the registry fix noted above, then rebooted...nothing , they still gone.
so then i uninstalled them from the device mgr>>rebooted...still gone
so then i physically disconnected the power cables and the ide cables >>rebooted, then
shutdown, then re-connected the cables and booted up again, voila ! they came back.
( aint life crazy?)
a side note: while the cd drives were disconnected i did a registry restore using a program i use regularly called REG SUPREME.
not sure what exactly fixed things for me but all i know is i dont have to FORMAT & INSTALL XP.
Thanks a bunch to this boards ADMIN GUY/GAL for keeping this thread alive, it probably saved me hours of reinstalling XP, applications, & service pack 2.

| RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
Just a summation:
Removal of Upper and lower filters only work if you can see the CD-RW/DVD in the Utility Manager, right? Since half of us can't even see the CD/DVD, there seems to be two completely different problems. Uninstalling the CD-RW/DVD is also not an option if you can't even find them to begin with.
Hardware failure is also not an option for me since I have two installations of Windows XP. The older one is featuring SP1 and the newer one is featuring SP2 and Mediaplayer 10. Both installations feature Nero 6.6 (SP2 patched and ready for the newer installation). While working great in the older Win XP (SP1), the newer Win XP install (SP2) can't find the CD-RW for me. Can Mediaplayer 10 have something to do with it?
Backup solution is to use the old Win XP whenever i need to. But i would really like to know whats causing it, and how it can be helped. To be honest I can't remember exactly when the CD-RW went missing. All i know is that the only thing that differetiate my two Win XP installs is the SP2, the mediaplayer and whatever else hotfixes winupdate have issued. All my programs that i run on the computers are the same install files.

| RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
Mike Screech.. the first thing you can do is to describe your problem a bit better. Actually, a lot better would be nice. Second, unless you find that your CD/DVD has gone missing you should post your question in a completely different topic, or start a new topic if there is no applicable one already.
Now, a solution that worked for me:
There seem to be two different kinds of "missing CD problems". Some people can see the CD/DVD in the Utility Manager (maybe with a questionmark), but they can't see it in the My Computer window. These people seem to have a bunch of solutions already (upper/lower limits, regfix, uninstall/reinstall).
Then there are those that can't find the CD/DVD at all, neither in My Computer or Utility manager. In my case the solution for this was to uninstall a nVidia nForce IDE SW driver, that replaces the default Win XP ATA drivers. I had the nForce 5.10 installed on my ASUS A7N8X-E m/b and that caused the CD/DVD to disappear entirely from my system, not just from the My Computer window. Fortunately it was really easy to uninstall just this part of the nForce driver.
I also came across a similar topic where an Intel user experienced the same problem and came up with the same solution. He too uninstalled the (Intel) driver that replaced the default Win XP ATA driver.
Hope this help some of you guys.

Hi everybody,
I've a problem with my CD burner too...it's Lite-ON LTR-12101B f/w LKU6
I have CD ROM too. The burner is jumpered master, the cdrom slave, everything with the IDE connections is OK.
Both devices can be seen in the explorer, there is no problem indicated in the Device Manager either...
BUT...the burner is not working at all, not reading, nor writing at all.
I can see the burner light is on when I turn the PC on, but I am afraid I can't hear nothing like spinning a CD in it....Is it possible that the burner had some way burned out ?
Thanks in advance....
P.S. I have two hards, and the PC is with XP

| RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
Hi, Google directed me here.
I have a four-year-old AMD Athlon 1GHz machine with Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 1. We have just bought a new car with a CD player, so I went to copy some of our home CDs to use in it. I have Nero version 5.5.3.2 "bundled". First I noticed that I could not open the CD-RW drive, and then noticed that it did not appear as drive D on "My Computer". No reference to this piece of hardware appears to remain on the computer, neither in Device Manager nor anywhere else. I suppose it could be a hardware problem but if a wire had come loose (you can tell I know very little about this, can't you!) surely the computer would not have deleted all references to drive D, etc. Anyway I read this thread and looked at the upper and lower filters, but this seems to relate to a problem I'm not getting (error messages) and also although I have those filters, they are not exactly the same as the ones in the Microsoft support page (one letter is different). I should much appreciate help!

| RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
I had a disappearing CD-RW this week and consulted this post. I read about the registry stuff (that stuff scares me! ha ha) and all the different solutions. I considered checking the cables on the inside, but, being a novice, I was a little freaked by that.
Strangely, the problem was resolved today. I installed Nero 7 Ultra Edition 7.2.0.3. After the installation, it gave me a message that said:
"The lower filter or Upperfilter registry key for CD-ROM was containing incorrect drivers. It has been corrected. Reboot your computer in order to connect with your CD-Rom" or something like that.
I rebooted, and that little yellow exclamation point was gone, and it began to acknowledge the existence of my CDs, so I can begin installing software.
I searched this post again afterward, in the event that, maybe this same method might help somebody.
After this episode, I certainly am aware of how little I know about my computer, and how much I need to study.

Hope that helps.

Registry patch worked for me, thanks, BUT ... do be careful which LowerFilters and UpperFilters entries you delete. Search for these in the Registry, but ONLY delete those in pages that refer to CD or DVD drives, as such entries can also be found for AGP graphics, Modems, Tape drives, hard drives etc. which you shouldn't touch! (Also, if you're worried, just backup the registry first via FILE -> Export on first running REGEDIT).

| RE: CD-RW Has disappeared from XP
Further to my post of 15 mins ago (!). b4 doing the reg fix, I had compared the list of entries under "driver details" for the failing PC and a working PC. The failing PC had 3 extra entries (drvmcdb.sys pfc.sys and sscdbhk5.sys). I then noticed that the relevant Upper and Lower Filters entries in the registry seemed to refer to these entities, and indeed, after removing those filters, the 3 extra files have disappeared from the driver list (and the PC works!). Maybe this post will help others to identify which registry entries to delete.

My Win XP computer has a combination DVD/CD reader and burner drive(Sony DVD RW DW-G120A). It worked fine until last Sunday when the burner stopped worked for both DVD and CD burning. The CD writing wizard gives me a "cannot complete" message and quits. Occasionally I get a corrupted file notice , but no indication if its a registry entry or application file.
I have looked at Microsoft Knowledge database and have read this thread, but I am unsure which way to try a fix, short of reinstalling Win XP and all the apps. Any guidance will be appreciated.

Well, I guess I have to answer my own question since no one else did. On another site I found the answer to the CD writing Wizard problem. The OLE32.dll file had to be re-registered with system 32, as follows:
*Click Start and select "Run". That brings you to a prompt where you type
*regsvr32 OLE32.dll and hit return key
*you will get a popup indicating success.
This worked for the CD Writing Wizard, but Nero still fails to burn. I am looking into why.
