This should solve most of your problems.
When the 5000 series was built, compaq was an original company. Then HP swallowed them up, so you have to go to www.hp.com to get any information from the company for your problem.
For example, for those of you who still think of computers as large blunt objects, this is the link for the software for my 5 year old computer:

You can get the software that came with the computer there.
Other information you might need is probably in the support section. Most of the time, you HAVE to spend probably a good deal of time to learn about your problem and the resolution before you ask for help. And most of the time the solution is out there, you just have to spend the effort finding it.
I hope that helps you all. My problem is quite different and much more complicated. I'm using the case from this pos computer to build another one which I can make from spare parts I've gathered over the last year. But unlike cases you buy at the store, this one came with no manual so I don't know what the pins are for the 3 or so cords this case comes with to plug into my motherboard I'm installing. If by some chance somebody out there has read this entire message I've written and actually has some clue as to what the answer to my problem is then please let me know.
Otherwise, screw it. I'll just wing it and hope I get lucky.

Instead of going into the bios to change to boot order, try pressing a different key to pull up a separate boot order menu instead of the enter-bios key. Another thing that should work, you could switch where your hard drive is plugged in to where ur cd rom is and it porbably will automatically boot from the cdrom. This stuff will only work on Compaq models i know of on pentium III systems and above possible pentium II systems as well. good luck |

First: the restore disk is to get back your old Operating System back, NOT your old programs or files. If you installed XP over an older windows like 98 or Millenium, It should keep your old settings, programs, and files. If you don't have these files anymore, this means you did a full overwrite, not an upgrade. This overwrite PERMANATLY gets rid of your files and programs. Unless you made backups you can never get those files back. Therefore downgrading will get you nowhere.
As far as the speed of XP, I am assuming you have 128MB of RAM or less. If you install 256MB of RAM (you can pick this up for less than $30) XP runs ALOT better than any other windows.
My recomendation is to pickup a stick of RAM, stay with XP and look for modern replacements for your older programs. I hope I have clearified your situation. |

I have a Compaq presario 5002us and my harddrive gone bad is dead, it was a 40GB drive and I decided since am buying a new one to get a 80GB, just letting you know am only now getting tech. with computers, it's a 800mhz amd duron processor, 128 mb , 56k modem ok hope that is enough info. My problem is I set up all the cables but when I try to set up the operation system which is windows xp it will start to set it up but then tell me there is an error and also it could be drives and check space or something like that. I installed windows xp on my p.c and it worked fine, but i didnt like it so i put windows 98 back on, but my screen can only have up to 16 colours and wont go no bigger than 640x480, before it went up to 24 true colour and 1140xsomething or something like that, and i dont know what to do, my windows 98 cd cant seem to find a driver for my audio and PCI comunication Device either.

I got the video drivers from archived drivers at Intel.com (Solano 82815/G/EG), and the audio drivers from Windows Update. The only thing that I could not get a driver for, or have the patience to find, is the modem driver (PCTel HSP MicroModem 56). $20 for a new modem would take care of that if I needed a modem, which I don't.
Used the program "Unknown Device Identifier v3.01" to find out the above info. |

I accidentally used my e-machines recvey Cds' in my Comapq presario 5000 macinr and messed up bg time. I have recovery CDss for both but not able to restore the compaq. When I use the compaq recovery CD I get a red screen with a message "recovery CD error". I downloaded a boot floppy disk, deleted partitions, created partitions, fomatted hard drive and after all these tries still getting the red screen. Any suggestions? |

If you recieved the red screen to contact tech support you are using the wrong disk. You should have 3 disks one for restoring your operating system, one for your applications, and one for the recovery of a compaq system. Since you used the emachines recovery disk, which by the way shouldn't have worked and I am suprized that they did, you need to use the OS restore cd. If you don't have these you can order them from HP parts. Call 800-HPINVENT and they will give you the hp parts dept. to order the cd for $10. |

I installed an 80 gb hard drive (7200 RPM) into an old Presario 5000 a while back, and it worked fine. I have heard of hard drives not being recognized by older computers because of the amount of data they can hold, but never because of the speed of the drive. I guess it is possible, but computers older than the Presario 5000 have been able to use 7200 RPM drives just fine(PIII 450mhz, made somewhere around 1998-1999). As for drivers, windows update had my audio driver(windows 98) and the modem drivers were found looking in google foe "PCtel HSP Micromodem 56" |
