I bought a PNY GeForce 6200 for my Compaq 5000, but i can't get it to run in my computer. whenever I try it says that an add-in isn't working properly and that I need to replace it. I put the card I had in it before(GeForce 400) and it runs fine. is the APG the problem, or is my computer just not going to work with it? is there anyway to fix this problem without spending a fortune? |

I have been playing around with my old compaq pressario 5000 I installed and partitioned a 200 G hard drive and installed xp from adisc that came with my laptop. I wanted to upgrade the motherboard and processor from M.B. Compaq 06E4H & AMD Duron 800 Mhz. It does not look too expensive if there is set that will fit and work. |

My daughter spilled a softdrink on the Presario 5310 keyboard. It connects with its own cord that is not a USB cord.
I checked ebay and cannot find one for sale. Anyone know where I can get one. Only half the keys work...

heres how i did it...
my friend brought me this dinosaur to fix last night...
finally what i did was strip ALL the unneccesary crap out of it. i.e. floppy, zip, dialmodem, etc.. he had two hard drives. the one 12.5 gig was built in. so i connected the better 20 gig set as master to ide 1, with one cd rom set as cable select after it on the same ribbon..
i then set the other HD AND the other cd rom both on
cable select on ide 2. start it up, hit f10 to get into bios. i then set disk 1 (hd 1) to boot first, then the master rom, then the second rom, then the last ancient hd. voila! I did have some initial problems getting past the logo screen. this is most likely due in great part to having your jumper pins set incorectly. once you get it to detect everything, hit f10 at that logo screen and get into bios, and tweak the boot sequence just how you like it.. in other words, if you're trying to reinstall windows, youll want it to boot from the cd rom with the disk first. if you've already installed it and are ready to roll, set the hd as your first boot disk..
if you have problems getting it to detect the drives, just grab a pair of tweezers and keep playing around with the jumper pins on the backs of the drives (cd roms and hds) till you get it strait.. the ide's should be labeled on the board. the black on for me was 1 and the white was 2. it now runs a brand new copy of win xp, upgraded to 512 mb ram, (which IS the max for the machine guys) cd rw burns fine, and even the ancient, albeit physically HUGE hd works.... slowly.. i even gave him a spare ethernet win xp
set it up fine. but in terms of boot time and win startup, it runs laps around what it used to do.. not a bad little machine for someone that just wants to download porn, rip disks, and sell crap on ebay... The bios on these things, albeit outdated, still works pretty good. i like the auto adjustment feature its got going.. if youre STILL having problems getting things to detect, you might try getting new IDE cables.. they are very delicate actually and do wear out.. my email is jubeiofatlantic@yahoo.com. feel free to email me regarding compaq issues and ill be happy to take my best shot at it.. |

DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ON THE INSIDE OF THE TOWER UNLESS THE CPU IS OFF AND THE POWER DISCONNECTED!
that is, unless you really know what your doing like
us nerds, then you can try to freak out the family and friends by restarting and shutting it down by jumping on the MB with a flat head screwdriver :) |

HP/Compaq has created an excellent tutorial on determining what kind of memory (and how much of it) to add to your computer. They also show you how to go about opening up the computer and adding the memory. Their information for adding RAM to the Compaq 5000 series desktop computers can be found here:

Do you think a 250GB (it's the smallest size I could find in shops) could work, probably requires some partionning, but I'm not sure about the size (it's to be used with a reinstalled Windows XP Pro)

Hi Mike,
I think you should be able to get it to work by using the software that comes with it (or which you can download online from the hard drive manufacturer's website). That software should allow you to overcome any size limitations your computer might have.
I recently installed an 80 gigabyte hard drive in an old Pentium 2 266 mhz computer because it's old 10 gigabyte drive had failed. Using that software I was able to get the computer to recognise and use the full 80 gigabytes of space.
So it might be a bit tricky, but quite possible.

I'm trying to "tune-up" my girlfriend's compaq presario desktop (4 years old) and am
confused by the hard drive space. The computer ("My Computer") says it has 80 gb of hard
drive space, but when I try to find what's using up 75 of those 80 gb, I can only account for a
small fraction of that space. Even third party programs (i.e., Glary Utilities and others like it)
can only account for a total of 20 gb. I'm guessing it's partitioned, but don't know how to find
(and delete) this missing filled space. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. |

I have a compaq 5BW120. It was 2nd hand, and I had to use the disk to restore it to factory settings when I got it.
Occasionally I would play a music cd using it, but not often and had no problems til last month.Tried and realized the disk drawer won't open. I notice when the comp turns on, the green light there flickers but does not stay on. DOes this mean the motor or something has just burnt out and I would need to replace the whole CD-Rom drive?
I always, being a computer moron tried the best I could to unravel the mystery.I went into systems, control panel etc...got this info: there is no CD-rom player attached to this computer ,and cd player cannot start..and yet in the windows setup, in the multimedia section it shows the cd player checked off, as if it is there.
DOes this make sense to anyone? And also, I was trying to addmemory yesterday..after almost breaking my thumb and fingers trying to force both ends to stay down so those little plastic things at the end could snap up, could not do it. And yet, it was a sdram memory stick. The one in it already was the compaq,the one I was trying ot put in one was toshiba that I cannibalized from a disused dell. Is there only one type of memory stick that I have to buy that will fit???

I did for my preserio 5000 and was pleased with the results.
After several calls to HP support I gave up on them, and found Computer Sergeons. I'm glad I did. I replaced the bad HD with a similar used one, and loaded the XP system from the resore CD I bought ($30?) from them. My old preserio is again working (such as it is ;-) |
