RE: compaq presario 5000

Well...I see that i'm not alone in having MAJOR problems with this dinosaur and I've even been a technician for over 15 years.
I'm going to give everyone some insight...take it as you will, but this IS the FACTS not only with this model, but just about ALL other models when dealing with the big guys. (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.
1. We are dealing with an old system, so the big guys just don't care about dealing with our issues. This is because of the money factor. In fact, if we figure our problems out...they actually see it as losing money because they didn't get to hooked into buying a whole new computer.
2. When/If you get ANY restore disks...DO NOT use them as you are MUCH better off getting a real (AKA GENUINE)copy of MS Windows regardless of which version you're trying to run. However, the best one to use for this dinosaur system is obviously XP.
3. I've also found that its not so much a matter of your settings within the BIOS, but rather the VERSION that is REALLY IMPORTANT...especially with older computers.
4. After doing EXTENSIVE research...what worked the best for me was to flash the BIOS to the latest version available, insert a MS Windows XP disk (preferrable either PRO or MEDIA CENTER EDITION, hit F9 on bootup, select your CD Drive, and basically your GREAT from this point on. All that will be left to do is visit the HP/Compaq website to download the latest XP drivers and you are DONE.
Oh and some final FYI...build your own computers and NEVER buy from the big guys unless you really do want the troubles as whats found in this forum. Find a nice local PC Technician like me who does PC repairs for a hobby...not a moneymaker. This way, you spend MUCH less money, MUCH less headaches, and you'll also be spreading the money more where its deserved...not just where it normally gets monopolized to!!! Thanks for researching, happy computing, and here's my e-mail if you should still need some assistence.
